hej hej ...
my experience... you are not mad!! :)
I love it in Jan, Feb and March as the trains are not full, you easily get a place in the night trains and so on !!
okay, you need a warm jacket and maybe your bagpack is a bit fuller with warm clothes, but thats it !!
have fun, Peter :)

2 years before I made my first interrail it was on summer. it was great. ok. last year I went on my second interrail on January-February. I went to belgium netherlands germany and denmark. before starting I was asking myself the same question: Am I mad? this year, in 15 days I'll go to my third interrail. I am planning to go to austria czech republic slovakia and poland. so, the answer is either yes I am mad! or it is really possible and still very fun. I can clearly say that I like going on interrail on winter better.

there is just a few things to consider about.

from my experience the first thing is; train stations are usually the coldest places on earth(!) (due to the air flow caused by the both sides open structure of the buildings) so think about arranging fast connections while traveling. You may regret if you wont avoid long wait times at the stations.

the second thing is to know that the interrail pass is your strongest weapon if you use it wisely. If somehow somewhere you'll have to wait in the cold doing nothing (you may miss a train or anything may happen to your back pack, lost or locked in) or have to spend the night on the street, have no where to sleep; think about getting on the first train going to a near city, or even to a town. trains are warm. And ride back in order to consume time. You can even take the train once more (and back) if there is still time till morning :)

This happend to me once in Amsterdam and I rode to Rotterdam several times and back till morning. It saved my life :)

Enjoy!
