We have 7 days to travel from Basel to Amsterdam from 29 August to 5 September 2022. What towns or cities on a train or bus route would you recommend we visit? We are interested in museums, historical sites, walking and hiking, mingling with people and soaking up the culture, and we enjoy good food, wine, and beer. We have been to the region around Strasbourg (loved it) and will be taking a tour of Germany after we explore Amsterdam.

will you be arriving in Basel from a Rhein cruise from Amsterdam? The obvious places on the direct railway are also regular stops on cruises so possibly not useful advice.

Thanks. We are arriving in Basel on our way to Amsterdam. We are not on the cruise.

In that case just follow the main railway. There are direct trains all the way to Amsterdam, and a lot more with a change at Cologne. Places on teh wway worth researching are Freiburg (and the Black Forest area around Titisee/Seebrugg), Heidelberg, Mainz , Koblenz (and the Mosel Valley) and Bonn. Between Karlsruhe and Cologne the ICE trains use a new high speed route but all others follow the scenic Rhein Valley which is definately the way to go. The section between Mainz and Koblenz has a selction of small villages, mostly involved in wine production, these are served by the lcoal trains.
