I am exploring if and how it would be possible to travel by train from Iran to India through Pakistan. Is there currently any train connection available?

You had much better first look into all the entry-requirements for YOUR nationality for IR and PK. The tipical westerner, IF he is even allowed in via that way PK, needs to be escorted by Paki-army and travel in some special reserved consigment.
seat61 has for all those railfans the best overview on overland routings and their quagmires to most countries in this world

Hi and welcome.
The biggest problem is: security + limitations for Western travellers in Pakistan. That's my information.
The route itself runs like this:
Theran to Zahedan
Zahedan to Quetta (only twice monthly)
Quetta to Lahore
Lahore to Amritsar
Amritsar to Dehli

Best, Peter :)

Thanks for your kind information Peter! Would you have details about security issues, which and where?

Thanks nltrainer, in the past I used to travel to PK for my work-different times I think. seat61 is a good source.

The "Zahedan Express" Zahedan – Quetta isn't running any longer. You'll have to sit on a military lorry together with four body guards. Neither are there trains between Lahore and Amritsar, but the border is supposedly possible to cross by ricksha.
To travel Overland on the Karakorum Highway from China or from Iran to Quetta you need to apply for a NOC together with your visa from Pakistan Embassy, and you supposedly get free bodyguards.
