I downloaded the Interrail App and it seems impossible to plan a trip from Zagreb to Istanbul. While it is suggested to go from Zagrab to Belgrade to Sofia to Istanbul, the App says there are none of these connections available. I don't really understand how this works. Maybe someone has a hot tip?

When do you want to travel?
At the moment the train from Sofia to Istanbul is suspended; also there is no direct train between Belgrade and Sofia; you can only travel between Belgrade and Sofia by changing trains in Nis and Dimitrovgrad (including an overnight stay in Nis); all in all the route is very cumbersome and in fact not even possible (since the night train to Istanbul does not run).
Better to travel by bus in this case - have a look at https://getbybus.com/ and http://metroturizm.com/
