How do you get from Vienna to Auschwitz’s nearest town which is Oswiecim?

Hi.
You have to travel with a change of trains.

Vienne (Wien) Hbf departure 11:10 by Railjet train
Breclav arrival 12:04

Breclav departure 12:10 by EC train
Oswiecim (Auschwitz) arrival 16:19

The train ticket is available from Austrian railways ÖBB from 22,90 EUR.
Buy it here: https://rail.shop/oebb

Enjoy your trip, Peter :)

Thanks so much. It’ll be next May. He (my husband is going. I’m staying in Vienna) will go, spend the night in Oswiecim, visit Auschwitz the next day and ride train back to Vienna later that day. How far in advance does he need to book in order to get a seat? Thanks again for your help.

Usually train tickets for Austrian ÖBB are available up to 180 days in advance. In December there is the annual "change of the train schedules", therefore I would wait until mid of December or January to get a saver fare ticket for this route. Tickets are in general available even on the day of departure, but it is cheaper to buy in advance.
Also if you want to wait what happens with Covid19 next spring (border closures or not), I'm sure you will be able to find saver fare tickets still in March and April.
Best wishes, Peter :)
