How do I start to plan a rail trip from Amsterdam to Stockholm, which is the fastest route and is it best to book early? Many thanks

If you only want fast-fly.
ON the rails and in trains takes at least some 24 hrs and will cost (assuming you are so unwise to not buying InterRail and making many more trips for hardly more money) also at least double as flying.
Now there is a dedicated site for all this-traintrips from UK (easy enough to hang on from some point) to about anywhere reachable on rails by trains, but somehow the moderators dont like it here to be mentioned. Probably fears that some people may hence be enticed to buy the odd ticket somewhere else. t ends on 61 and google is your best friend. I wont repeat all thats easy to find there. Plus the basics for about any traintrip in EUR are also always the same: start with any tripplanner, that of bahn.de is widest cover and can be set to quick/less changes, etc.
Then comes the problem of buying tix (once again: DO consider a thing like InterRail etc-then you only have to inform yourself about possible required REServations-on the ´official´ site interrail.eu) or not. The answer will vary a lot if youre used to that, have experience or only know UK-style or not even that. For possible info maybe better to go to a site like tripadvisor.//forum//trains-rails. They aim at complete dumbo ignorant USAers, so you can leave out the things you already know.
Oh-and try to make the slight detour to visit Gretha and thank her for putting to get=trains again in the picture. IF she succeeds you had better wait 2-3 yrs when the Swedes have set up again direct overnight express trains from places like BRussel (for the burocrats) or Cologne-much easier to hook in then.

Hi!

Do you want to return to Amstedam? Or only make a single trip to Stockholm?
Best/fastest route is via Hamburg - Copenhagen - Stockholm. During the summer months it would be possible to cover the whole trip in probably less than 24 hours, going from Amsterdam to Hamburg during the day, then with an overnight Intercity train to Copenhagen and continue to Stockholm.
In general it is favourable to book online in advance to get cheaper fares (however you then have to use the booked trains). If you want to be more flexible and maybe visit some other places along the way, an Interrail pass might be the more suitable option.

If you have more questions let us know. :)
