Varies per country and for some trains this is not possible at all-only in person when there at a station., others accept only telefone requests. So first spend some time on reading the advice for that.
Also_ most non-Euro's thnk that each and every trainride needs to be reserved-well, trains are NOT planes and often this is not needed at all. Again: check first.

im thinking of traveling from Spain to Italy, I see on the website the ferry tickets are offered to pass holders at a discount. how much is this discount? and how do I go about using it. the booking website eurail took me too on the page about ferry's there is no place to put in ou have a eurail pass for a discount. I don't want to plan on this route and then get there and not be able to get a discount

Hi.
Your route leads from Barcelona via Marseille and Nice to Milan.

1) Barcelona to Marseille
You can travel by TGV high-speed-train with a reservation fee of 34 EUR. This reservation is only available locally in Spain at a railway station.
https://rail.cc/eurail-train-reservation/tgv-france-espana/298

It is FREE to travel from Barcelona by free regional train to Perpignan.

Example:
Barcelona Sants dep 07:16
Cerbère arr 10:04

Cerbère dep 10:25 - TER train
Perpignan arr 11:01

From Perpignan either continue to Marseille by free TER trains or national TGV train. Reservation possible online for 10 EUR.

Some days the TER from Cerbère ( dep 10:25 ) continues via Perpignan to Avignon ( arr 14:18 ).

From Avignion continue ( dep 14:58 )by free TER train to Marseille ( arr 16:13 ).

From Marseille you can continue by free THELLO train to Italy: https://rail.cc/eurail-train-reservation/thello/289

Or use the ferry Barcelona to Rome: https://rail.cc/blog/barcelona-civitavecchia-rome

Another nice add-on is the Petit Train Jaune on your way Barcelona to Perpignan. It is free: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video
