Hi PEA1965,
you\'ve got daily night trains Vienna-Rome and Rome-Palermo, plus stunning views pretty much all the way if you travel by day, so it\'s completely up to you. I would recommend the following, since the line from Vienna to Venezia is one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Wien Hbf 06:25 RJ 131
Venezia Mestre 13:53 13:53
Venezia Mestre 15:37 FR 9439
Roma Termini 19:11
Roma Termini 19:48 ICN35193 (Night Train)
Palermo Centrale 10:05
However, the line from Rome to Palermo is also very interesting and scenic. In conclusion: You\'ve got all the options.
Have a nice trip!

Hi and welcome.
As Quenzon already said, you have a lot of options and a lot to see on the way from Vienna to Palermo.
Do you travel with a rail pass or do you want to travel by train tickets?
The direct way or also with a detour?
To get an impression of possible routes, have a look at the blogs bellow and film.

Hi and welcome to railcc!
When are you travelling? What landscapes are you interested in?
During summer you could take the night train from Vienna to Milan, still enjoy the famous Semmering railway during dusk, spend the day in Milan and then take the night train from Milan to Palermo; on the following day you will travel mostly along the Mediterranean sea (option of course also possible during winter).
By taking the early railjet from Vienna (which Quenzon mentioned) to Venice, then changing to Milan you could also reach the night train to Palermo.

Thank you all. So this is what we decided:
September 9 - leave Salzburg, Austria for Venice
See Venice for one day.
September 10 - somehow make out way from Venice to Palmero.
So all of your recommendations help. We just have to figure out Salzburg to Venice.
Should we buy a rail pass now? When do tickets go on sale?
Thank you all!
