Our year long holiday planning is soon to begin. 24th November we depart Perth WA. I have finally after your advice settled on our criss crossing across Europe to endup in Ljuliana for Chritmas. Have been able to book most of the train tickets and just waiting for some other tickets to become available.
Need some advice again on where to stay after doing the Bernina Express train from Chur to Tirano.
1) Stay the night in Tirano and spend 1 night somewhere else.
2) catch a train after Bernina Express and travel further on and stay 2 nights somewhere ???
3) I had thought of Vereena? as it is winter everything is closed and accommodation is limited?
4) Your suggestion
thanks in advance

Hi!

Staying overnight in Tirano is not a must; if possible I would continue your trip and stay somewhere else for two nights.

When do you arrive in Tirano?

You might look at some place at Lago di Como; the train from Tirano to Milano runs along its eastern shore for quite some time. Maybe check out Varenna, from here you could cross the lake by boat and go either to Bellagio or Menaggio from where you can continue to to Como by bus or boat. From Como again by train to Milano and onwards.

Never been to Verona (I guess you meant that?) but there will be plenty of accomodation available even during winter, no worries. Personally, I would recommend to go to Torino, but that might be a little tricky depending on your time of arrival in Tirano (calculate with about four hours Tirano to Torino). From Torino you have frequent direct trains to continue to Venice and onwards to Trieste, no problem.
Of course, Milano is an obvious stop too...other cities in the area worth looking at would be Bergamo, Mantova, even Bologna would be possible to reach (depending on your arrival time in Tirano).

Hi.
Is it possible for you to make a break along the route of Bernina Express?
Then think about Sankt Moritz (expensive, but nice) - or close by where I stayed last month in Hotel Morteratsch - directly in pure nature (but with restaurant) and with an own railway station: [ux]https://www.booking.com/hotel/ch/morteratsch.en-gb.html?aid=350742[/ux]
Just a thought, as I really liked it. :)
Pete :)

Hi again, thank you for your help, I had booked in Tirano, now cancelled, and rebooked in Varenna. Happy with that arrangement.
Unfortunately we are coming to the end of our holidays travel then and no time left to stop on the Bernina Express, but would have been a great idea.
We arrive in Tirano 12.30ish after the Bernina Express train trip, from Chur.
thanks again for your help.

When arriving 1230 in Tirano its the perfect time for lunch - there are quite a few restaurants around the railway station; I always go to the restaurant of Hotel Bernina opposite the RhB station. They have a nice terrace just beside the platforms of the Trenord station but in November it is probably better to sit inside. ;)
