Hi guys! :)

I\'d like to know if you need a passport or some other identification if you go by train from Copenhagen to Hamburg? Also I\'d like to know if you need identification from Hamburg to Paris (by train)?

If you need a passport, what exactly is the place where they will check your identification? Will it always be checked or do they use random spot checks?

Quick answers are highly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance, your reply may save a life.

Hi and welcome to railcc!

Sorry for the late answer - anyway, here it goes:

You need a valid ID (national ID or passport) to travel in Europe (even if you are EU citizen). You may need to present valid ID at a border crossing or at any point in a foreign country.
Also, for purposes of ticket inspection a valid ID is needed in many countries for most kinds of tickets - this applies for rail passes (Interrail etc) and most tickets bought online (usually most tickets nowadays are issued for a certain person which then might need to show his/her ID to the conductor during travel).
