Hello

We are 4 adults with luggages. After a cruise, we will be in Vienna september 20 and 21 and we must be in Grimentz (Switzerland) by the end of that last day (21).

We want to rent a car either in Munich, or in Geneva, the last one being better because of the french "side" of the airport (pick-up France, drop-off France-Toulouse).
We need the car because we will be traveling in Switzerland and France up to October 6th.

There are many possibilities to do it by Munich, but by Geneva, it looks very difficult (no night train ?). We would have to be in Geneva at around 17:00 to make it work.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Gaston

Hi Gaston, welcome to railcc!

If you leave very early (05:30) from Vienna you can reach Geneve before 17:00 with a change of trains in Zurich. Tickets are available here: [ux]https://rail.shop/omio/[/ux]

You can also travel overnight from Vienna to Zurich: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/night-train/vienna-zurich-nj-466/64[/ux] and then continue to Geneve during the day. That way you would comfortably arrive in Geneve before noon.

@Flo
Thanks. I didn\'t think about these 2 possibilities.

If we travel overnight from Vienna, is it a single ticket, or do we have to buy another ticket for the second part from Zurich to Geneva ?

Maybe I was at the wrong place (sorry if it is the case), but look at what I got when trying to display the information for the trip:

Thanks again for helping us,

Gaston

Also...

When doing a seat reservation on DB what exactly means:
-Open saloon with table
-Open saloon
-Compartment ?

In our case (4 adults) is there a better choice ?

Thanks,

Gaston (a newbie)

When travelling overnight, you would have to buy your ticket directly at ÖBB (Austrian Railways) at [ux]https://rail.shop/oebb/[/ux] (Omio at [ux]https://rail.shop/omio/[/ux] cant sell ÖBB nightjet (night train) services yet).

To get the best connection, which is

Wien Hauptbahnhof (central station) 2127 - 0820 Zurich HB (central station)
Zurich HB 0903 - 1145 Geneve

you have to click on the "options" icon (cog wheel), then select "longer connection time".

You can then book the whole journey from Vienna to Geneve; I would recommend to either book a full four bed couchette compartment or two double (two bed) sleeper compartments; if you want ensuite shower/WC you have to book a Deluxe sleeper.

Regarding the DB reservation options; why do you want to make a reservation at DB website? For what service?
Open salon = "regular" 2nd class coach with 2 seats arranged on both sides of the central aisle. Seats are usually arranged "airline type style" although some seats are in groups of four facing each other. Most of these groups are:
Open salon with table = a group of four seats facing each other with a table in between
Compartment = a six seat compartment with more privacy compared to open saloon; rather rare on most trains in Germany
