Hii, I\'m travelling with Interrail and I would like to know if there\'s a way to travel from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa because I can\'t find any information about trains online. The interrail app doesn\'t show any trains and neither does the Greek website. Anyone with some knowledge or experience on this?

Hello Timbathor,

Unfortunately there are no trains going to Igoumenitsa. The Greek government plans on building a railway line to Igoumenitsa, but as you might expect funds are currently low and construction works have been postponed. The best way to get from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa is by bus. The national bus company is KTEL, which serves almost the entire country. Sidenote: On the Interrail app or website there are no trains shown within and to/from Greece.

There are not many railway lines in Greece, partially because of the low funds and partially because of the very rugged terrain. If you want to know where in Greece you can get by train, you can find the official railway map here: [ux]http://www.trainose.gr/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Χαρτης-Δικτυου1.pdf[/ux]

Hi and welcome to railcc!

If you want to go to Igoumenitsa solely because of the ferry connection to Italy you could also think of making the detour by train via Athens - Kiato to Patras, from where the ferries to Italy (Bari, Ancona, Venice, Trieste,...) depart - most (or all?) of these ferries then also make a stop at Igoumenitsa.
This would take longer of course than taking a direct bus to Igoumenitsa but you could do the whole trip by train.

Another alternative would be to go by train from Thessaloniki via Larissa to Kalambaka to visit the Meteora monasteries: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/train-ferry-greece/[/ux] - from Kalambaka there should at least be one daily connection by bus to Igoumenitsa.
