Can I book hostels the same day I arrive in a city or is that too late?

That highly depends on the country, city and time you are travelling. For example, if you want to stay in a hostel in norway in the high season (june/july), you definitely should book some weeks in advance to ensure that you get a room and don\'t pay too much.

In asian countries like thailand or vietnam you normally find a decent hostel without any problems.

Hi.
I have the same experience like deeaygee wrote.
Especially in the big European cities, have a look a bit in advance on hostel booking websites like [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] to find good hostels to a good price - especially if you know already your date when you will be there. South-East Asia is much more relaxing for spontaneous travelling. :)
Pete :)

If you travel by Interrail, you are more flexible... I often booked hostels or hotels in advance in the big cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, etc as soon as was sure about my travel date. To find nice hostels to a good price. For cities where I did not know my exact date, I just booked one or two days in advance - if no good hostel was available, I changed my route a little bit and selected a smaller city beside. :)

Hi and welcome to railcc!

If you want to stay in the "good" hostels I would recommend to book reservations in advance, especially (but not only) in Amsterdam (!), Paris, Barcelona, Nice, Rome, Bergen,...
These are the cities where I made some not too good experiences regarding hostels being either fully booked or of bad quality.
However, if you are travelling alone it is usually easier to find a bed even during peak season.
It also helps to already check out a number of hostels in each city you want to go to so that you know where you have to go and dont lose time searching for hostels while travelling. :)
