NIGHT TRAINS in SWEDEN
The night-trains running from Stockholm to the North are very comfortable and as well cheap to use. It is recommended to make a reservation in advance especially in the summer months.

Hi, first post, be gentle :)
I need to book the night train from Stockholm to Kiruna on August 7th to arrive on the 8th. There are two of us and we are walking the Fjallraven Classic, starting on the 9th.
We\'re thinking sleeper cabin for the two of us (it\'s my son and I, not a couple), but the options are a little confusing for me:
Am I right that the first column 1cl Share sleep comp wc/show 2 is a private 2 bunk cabin with toilet and shower?
What is the difference between that and Prvt Sleep comp 2/3 Does that not have a wc/shower?
And then we have the difference between SJ Compartment and SJ ResPlus
Once I have this ticket, then I need to book a seat on the day train to Kiruna, I don\'t think this can be done on one ticket, correct?
Can anyone explain this to a Swedish train newbie please?

Hi Mike.
Here a little bit of help for you. :)
:arr: train tickets for Sweden:[ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/sj[/ux] or SJ.
1cl share sleep comp wc/show:
1st Class private compartment
You have the compartment to yourself (for one or two persons), and sleep in a bed, with a pillow, pillowcase, bottom sheet, duvet cover and duvet provided.
The compartment has shower/WC, fully equipped with soap and towels.
In the morning, breakfast is included on the night train, or on a connecting SJ train or at one of the selected breakfast eateries at the destination. If you disembark the train before 06:00h, speak to a member of staff on the train to get a voucher in lieu of breakfast. Access to the SJ Lounge in Göteborg and Stockholm, before and after the journey, are also included.
Prvt sleep comp (2-3):
Berth in a sleeping car compartment
The compartment has three ready-made beds, each with a pillow, pillowcase, bottom sheet, duvet cover and duvet. There are women's and men's compartment. The compartment has two luggage racks. Skiing and other bulky luggage can be placed under the bottom bed. Electrical outlets with 230V (for electric shaver, etc.) are in the interior. Sink is in the compartment and two toilets are located in the corridor.
Bed couchette compartment:
Bunk in a 6-berth couchette
The compartment has 6 berths and you make up your own bed. The middle bed is folded down during the day to provide comfortable seating.
Bedding consists of a pillowcase, sheet sleeping bag and blanket. You snuggle down in the sheet sleeping bag and use the blanket as a duvet. You use one of the back cushions as a pillow. WC and stowage areas are along the corridor.
There are three compartment alternatives to choose between: ladies, gentlemen and mixed. Mixed compartments mean that both ladies and gentlemen can book a place.
Seat:
It is just a seat.
PHOTOS:
Here some examples how a Swedish night train looks like: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-10094/389
Ticket type:
In general, I recommend to buy an E-Ticket and Reservation. Then you get a code by email to collect your ticket in a Swedish railway station at a ticket window (Resebutik - possible in Stockholm main station - https://rail.cc/en/stockholm/stockholm-central-railway-station/l79 ) or ticket machine. Also possible in 7-Eleven stores and Pressbyrån (+SEK 20 service fee).
SJ Compartment: this is a standard ticket including ONLY the rail travel. In your case from Stockholm to Boden by night train.
SJ-Resplus: it includes the Resplus rabatter. Public transportation is included in several cases (bus, tram, subway). As you change from train to train in Boden, I think it is not worth to spent more money for this type of ticket in your train.
 To resume: buy a SJ Compartment - 1cl share sleep comp wc/show 2 to have a compartment for 2 persons including private shower an WC.
Currently available from USD 392.
PLUS the ticket from Boden to Kiruna, try[ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/sj[/ux] as eticket or sj.se

Looks good. Is this 1 bed or 2 beds for 2 people?
Cheers,
Mike.

There is one lower and one upper bed.
Have a look at this link: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-10094/389
Photos 12-15 (if you count from the top).
The top bed is moved up to be in day position as seated compartment.

Ok, I have the night train (92) to Boden C booked and paid for:
Stockholm C Boden C 2014-08-07 22:40 2014-08-08 11:04 92 12 hr 24 min
but now I have another problem.
I don't seem to be able to book the train from Boden to Kiruna!

Am I doing something wrong? There are two trains, 7156 and 7160, and both are showing the same message.

hi, Peter.
I would like to book the night train from Stockholm to Abisko in Dec 2015 for 2 people. I got so many from your post. Thanks.
However, I still encountered below matters while I try to book it online.
1) Do I just need to purchase the tickets of SJ Compartment for night train from Stockholm to Abisko? no need for the SJ-Resplus or change train to train in any station?
2) I would like to take the night train on 14 Dec 2015. However, I can only find the schedule & price for the one on 12 Dec 2015. Is it still no reservation for tickets on 14 Dec 2015 now?
Thanks your advice in advance.

Hi.
I suppose you want to book on ACPRail https://rail.shop/acprail ?
It depends on the category you want to travel.
Book a SJ-Resplus E-Ticket and Reservation - Non Refundable if you want to get the cheapest price.
Here a list of available options:
https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-94/106
and more photos here:
https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-10094/389
1cl prvt sleep comp(wc/shower) should be 1-person-compartement with shower and toilet in the compartment
Bed couchette compartment: Couchette 6 | 6-berth-compartment | 2nd class
Bed sleeper compartment: Sleeper 3 | 3-bed-compartment | private washing facility | 2nd class
Seat: just a seat :)
If you like, get it confirmed from ACPRail.
Pete :)

Sorry for the delayed response but it might be worthwhile for other users to hear.
The reason I was having trouble booking all the way to Kiruna was that there was maintenance on the line between Boden C and Kiruna.
With the ticket I bought we were transferred to a bus at Boden C and the journey took much longer than planned. Instead of getting easily from Kiruna Station to Nikka, we had to pay for a one way taxi fare. :(
On the sleeper train, we were given the end cabin close to the carriage entry. The bathroom smelled awful, there must have been a plumbing problem. I checked a few of the other cabins when they were vacated and they did not smell. I suggest not choosing the end cabin on the SJ sleeper trains, but it may just have been that one cabin.
At the end of the day, it probably would have been less hassle and more reliable to fly to Kiruna for not much cost difference.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for your pacience in explaining the options for everyone. However, for the date I am looking to go, there are 6 options!
Travelling as a couple for a special birthday, we would like a cabin for 2, but don\\\'t mind sharing a bathroom.
Options:
Seat
Bed couchette compartment
Prvt sleep comp (2-3)
Bed sleeper compartment
1cl share sleep comp wc/show 2
1cl prvt sleep comp(wc/shower)
Any advice?

Hi James.
Yes, it looks a bit complicate - and it\\\'s important to select the right one to be satisfied. A comfortable cabin with private shower and WC is a really nice experience which I recommend! Especially travelling more than 17 hours...! :)
On 04 March 2017 you have two options to travel by night train from Stockholm https://rail.cc/en/stockholm/c to Abisko https://rail.cc/en/abisko/c.
If you book via our partner ACPRail [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/sj[/ux], the following options pop up
# train 01 - direct train
Stockholm dep 17:29
Abisko arr 11:02
Availabilities:
- Private compartments with hand basin in the compartment and two WCs on the corridor = Prvt sleep comp (2-3)
- Private compartment (like above) and shared with a possible third person = Bed sleeper compartment
- Couchettes with 6 beds = Bed couchette compartment
- Seats = Seat
# train 02 - with change in Boden
Stockholm dep 22:40
Boden arr 10:22 / dep 10:35 - from Boden you continue in a normal seated wagon in 1st or 2nd class (depends on the night train ticket)
Abisko arr 15:59
Availabilities:
- Private 1st class compartment with shower and WC in the compartment, including breakfast = 1cl prvt sleep comp(wc/shower)
- Two-bed private 1st class compartment (like above, but for two persons) = 1cl share sleep comp wc/show 2
- Private compartments with hand basin in the compartment and two WCs on the corridor = Prvt sleep comp (2-3)
- Private compartment (like above) and shared with a possible third person = Bed sleeper compartment
- Couchettes with 6 beds = Bed couchette compartment
- Seats = Seat
What to book now:
- if you want to travel in a private 2-bed cabin with your own shower an WC inside of the cabin take train 02 and book: 1cl share sleep comp wc/show 2.
But you have to change in Boden - not complicate, but just want to mention it.
- if it is okay for you, to travel in a private two-bed compartment, but to share the WC , I recommend the direct train 01 with option: Prvt sleep comp (2-3).
When I travelled this train, I also saw a very nice shower on the floor - but I\\\'m not sure if it is always included.
Have a look at the photos here:
https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-10094/389 and https://rail.cc/en/night-train/stockholm-narvik-nt-94/106
If you feel unsure booking via the ACPRail booking system, you can also have a look on the website of Swedish railways here: [ux]https://rail.shop/sj[/ux]
Have a nice trip and all the best, Peter :)

Hi James and Peter
I am also planning a journey to the north in 2017, leaving for Narvik in early August returning a couple of days later, and have come to similar conclusions.
It will be a trade-off between:
* a through train without needing to change at Boden, but not having the choice of ensuite WC/shower facilities; and
* a compartment which DOES have ensuite WC/shower facilities, but which needs a change of train in Boden.
The time for the train change at Boden is at the very civilised time of about 10:30, and this would present no problems. The “through train” times however would allow about three extra hours in Narvik (and presumably similar in Abisko) – significant for a short visit.
So, as I am now 73, I do like to enjoy the maximum level of comfort available and have chosen the of ensuite WC/shower facilities over the increase in time at the destination. Having taken a 36 hour round trip by coach from Rovaniemi to Nordkapp in 2014, I am trying this time to be more comfortable. The prospect of having to walk down the corridor in the middle of the night does not really appeal, and the availability of a private shower definitely has its attractions.
Hope you have a really great time James.
Regards
Richard
