Hi All,

We\'re a family of 3 on our first trip to Italy. We are travelling from Lake Como to Milan followed by Venice, Florence, Naples & finally to Rome.

Can some seasoned train travelers advise if it is necessary to purchase train tickets in advance? Or is it easier [cheaper]to purchase train tickets at the respective train stations on the day of travel? Are there first class train compartments along these routes? Or just normal compartments? We\'ll be travelling with luggages & are concerned about security onboard trains.

All your advice & help would be much appreciated!

regards,
sph

Hello SPH and welcome to rail.cc

Do you know your exact travel dates in Italy, as you already booked hotels? If this is the case, it is cheaper to buy advance tickets, as you will get saver prices for the high-speed-trains. Just try and have a look at [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]

If you travel more spontaneously, an Interrail or Eurail pass (what country are you from?) might also be a nice solution for you.

I saw you also posted concerning luggage storage in Switzerland (Zurich), means you make a round trip in Europe ?! Post your route here, then it is easier to find the best option for you. :)

By the way... from Zurich in direction of Milan, travel this route - it is free to use if you have an Interrail or Eurail pass and one of the most scenic ones in the Alps:

Security in Italian trains: it is as everywhere in Europe. Have a look on your luggage and nothing will happen. Italy is in my eyes not more "dangerous" as German, the Netherlands or somewhere else. :)
