Hi , we are hoping to travel from Ljublana to Venice with one change in Villach on the night of the 28th June. Reservation for both trains is mandatory. On the interrail reservation service it is charging about 30 euro for just a seat on each however on the rail.cc site its is saying that reservations should only be 5 euro on the first train and 14 euro on the other. Do we have to reserve through interrail or could we do this online instead and get the cheaper prices?

Hi Leah and welcome to rail.cc
It\'s a bit complicate to travel this route over night. Do it the easy way:
Ljubljana to Nova Gorica.
Then border crossing like explained here: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/italy-slovenia-train/[/ux]
And finally from Gorizia by regional train to Venice.
This connection is free of extra reservation fees for Interrail. :)
And think about visiting Lake Bled: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/[/ux]
From Lake Bled you have a nice railway line to Nova Gorica from where you continue to Italy like explained above (German language only, but have a look at the photos): [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/de/ljubljana-pula-zug-istrianerbahn/[/ux]
Schedules via [ux]https://plan.rail.cc[/ux]
And please support all the free information and help we offer with the purchase of your official Interrail pass via our partner link (no extra costs for you): [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)
Pete :)

Hi Leah,
I assume you are looking at the following connection:
Ljubljana 2355 - 0131 Villach
Villach 0445 - 0824 Venice
The reservation charges on rail.cc are the prices you would have to pay locally at a station. If you buy them through the reservation service you have at least some booking fees on top of that.
Anyway, like Peter said I would travel this part of the trip during the day, as it is just a 6h30 trip through some scenic landscapes. And I wouldnt want to wait in Villach in the middle of the night. Anyways, if you want to travel overnight, I would buy the reservations locally at a station. At 30€ for a seat it would be cheaper to stay an extra night in Ljubljana, then travel to Venice during the day.

I just came across a new bus from Ljubljana to Trieste, operated by Slovenian Railways and Arriva: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/sz-arriva-bus/335[/ux]
It runs twice daily, you can find schedules, including connecting services from Trieste to Venice here: [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux]
