if you just want to let your parents know that you are ok then find internet access and use skype :)
about your mobile, i suggest you to use a prepaid card...

I have always my own mobile phone with me ... it isn't so expensive any more in Europe, compared to a public phone somewhere on a station or ...
and in the most of the hostels you have free internet access to send emails or use skype... :)

if your planning on ringing home etc quite a bit and your on a contract with your mobile i'd ring up the company and ask about special packages/bundles for abroad...that way you can pay a one of charge and then have discounted price per minute calls... :P

my vodafone sim card (contract) was going to charge me £100 deposit to get the roaming on my phone, but fortunately my virgin contract from before was still open and already had roaming on it. i think it's more convienient having that than a phonecard incase the phonecard didn't work everywhere and at least this way it's also a bit easier in case god forbid there's any emergencies! if anyone else wants info, all i did was email the network and virgin are actually sending me info without me even asking - good old richard branson! it's free to received texts, 25p to send, then in most of europe (well the EU) it's 30p to call 15p to receive. which isn't bad when pay as you go costs are about the same in the UK...
