Hello,

I read that the overnight trains from Split to Budapest run Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays but cannot be bought online, is this correct?

If they need to be bought at the station can they be purchased in advanced or does it need to be on the day?

How much is a two person sleeper for this journey?

Do these typically sell out fast during peak season or more so on certain days?

Thank you for your help

Hi and welcome to rail.cc!

Yes, online tickets/reservations are not available unfortunately. You can try and book at either the website of Hungarian Railways MAV START at [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux] or at the website of Croatian Railways HZPP at [ux]https://rail.shop/hzpp[/ux] however in the past the ticket for the night train wasnt available online as far as I know.

Tickets can be bought in advance and if possible I would strongly advise to do so as the train is quite popular. Will you start your journey in Split or willyou have the possibility of buying the reservation at another station before? Are you going to travel with regular tickets or a rail pass?

Hi Flo,

Thank you for getting back to me.

We will be in Dubrovnik approximately a week and a half before, and Split a week before we would need to depart Split for Budapest. Would I be able to purchase a ticket from Dubrovnik somewhere? Or can I only purchase it in Split once we arrive.

Would a week in advance allow us enough time in advance to purchase a 2 sleeper/bed birth?

We won’t have a rail pass so would be regular passes.

Thank you
Nicolle

Hi Nicolle,

in the meantime we got confirmation that the night train is running daily this summer season: https://rail.cc/en/night-train-budapest-split-daily-2017/n27

Dubrovnik has no train connection so I dont know if you would be able to get your train ticket through a travel agency that sells HZ (Croatian Railway) and international tickets.
However, since the train runs daily this season chances are much higher that you will get a ticket for Split - Budapest one week before at the station in Split.

When you want to get sure you can make reservation in advance in another country than Croatia at an international ticket desk office.
From which country are you from? Perhaps we can tell you if it´´ is possible to buy it at your home country.

Price of reservation in sleeping car (33 Euro per person in a double compartment, 22 Euro in triple, 20 Euro in a 4 bed couchette, 13,40 Euro in a 6 bed couchette) should be the same in Croatia and in other western European countries. Only in some countries of Eastern Europe (e.g. Czech Republic, Hungary) you maybe get a discount of 30%, but not in Croatia I think.

The ticket (not the reservation) probably is cheaper when you buy at Split (in case you don´t have an Interrail Pass).

I am from Australia. Do you know if there is anywhere in Australia i can purchase the train ticket? I will be in Greece before i head to Croatia.

To confirm, the night train departs from Split at 18:17?

thank you

Sorry, I dont know about the possibility of purchasing the ticket in Australia. If an agency sells it, there will definitely be a high markup on the regular fare. I would recommend to contact Croatian Railways directly via mail [ux]rail.shop/hzpp[/ux], to see whether you can reserve your tickets online via mail and pay and collect them locally at Split station. The railways of Montenegro offer such a service, so it could be worth trying - although to be honest I dont think it will work.

Unfortunately I dont know of other possibilites...ACP Rail [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/[/ux] who can sell quite a lot of tickets doesnt offer anything either.

Of course, it wouldnt be a problem to get tickets locally, at least for the connecting services with a change of trains and a sleepover in Zagreb - this would still be an option if you cant get a ticket for the through night train in advance and the night train being fully booked locally as well.

Hi there,

Looking at using this train later this year, it has been very confusing looking for information online! I hope you can help me.

Does anyone have any idea roughly how much it costs, especially for a 2 person sleeper compartment?

We are looking at travelling on the 21st June, and would try to buy the tickets a week before, the 13th. Apparently the train doesn\'t start running until the 16th. Would it be possible to buy tickets on the 13th? Will this be too late? I know this is a very busy train.

Also, are we able to pick up the tickets in Split? I have seen it said some places that you can only pick up the tickets in Hungary.
