FINLAND - SWEDEN: free bus connection (Kemi-Tornio-Haparanda-Luleå)

In the North of Finland, there is no passenger train connection to Sweden. You have to use a bus. Several connections available every day.
If you travel by rail pass (Interrail or Eurail), you are allowed to use this bus connection between Kemi (Finland) and Lulea (Sweden) for free.

:arr: For all details and photos, please read the railcc blog: https://rail.cc/blog/kemi-lulea-bus/

Peter, could you help me? As I understood, buses run from Monday to Friday mostly. And the timetable is valid till the 10th of August. I'm going to get from Kemi to Haparanda in August(15) on Sunday morning. How can i do this and what bus shall I take to get Haparanda or Tornio? Thanks in advance.

Hi.

I only have the link to the official timetable available by the bus company running this route:
http://www.veljeksetsalmela.fi/KuKeHa.html

But I never had problems using a bus on this route connecting to one of the trains running the route Rovaniemi-Helsinki and back.

Sorry that I can't help you with more details for now.

Peter :)

Hi.
Check the websites of the bus companies mentioned above. Usually ony schedules until mid of June are online. But I think they will update it soon.
About single fares I can't give you details, only the information that InterRail is free between Kemi and Lulea.

I made a post in the Sweden section of this board, and I just copy it in here:

these are the timetables untill 18th of June. I write the departure and arrival times after the 18th June in brackets.
Hi,

the times aren't quite correct any more, probably due to time table changes

The bus leaves Lulea at:

8.20 9.50 10.50 13.00 14.00 15.10 16.35 18.40(18.55) 21.00(21.10)

and arrives in Haparanda at:

10.35 12.15 13.10 15.30 16.3517.45 18.50 20.55(21.10) 23.15 (23.25)

Some of the busses go on to Tornio, so you don't have to walk. Just aks the conductor.

Return:

dep. Haparanda:

4.40 5.20(5.30) 6.50 8.30 10.00 12.30 13.45 15.10 16.10 17.10

arr. Lulea

7.00 7.40(7.50) 9.45 10.50 12.35 14.50 16.10 17.45 18.45 19.45

At weekends, there are different timetables!!

Look at http://www.ltnbd.se/tidtabeller/ and then search for haparanda. Lines 20 and 100 do the journey.
I have a flexipass, and I was wondering, is this bus free as well if you don't use a day on your card? How much does it cost if it's not free?
Thanks in advance 8)

Hi!

The official rule is:

- If you get a free trip with 100% discount (such as this bus connection) you have to use a travel day on your Flexi Pass
- If you only get a certain discount (eg 50%) you do not have to use a travel day.

Lulea - Haparanda is 155 SEK/17€, Tornio - Kemi is 6,30€ - there is no online price information for the small bit Haparanda - Tornio but it wont be much extra, maybe 10-20 SEK. Or you walk on foot if the bus ends in Haparanda - it's just some hundred metres in between the two bus terminals in SK/FI.

Hey all!

I was wondering if the schedule applies for this winter holidays as well? 30 mins traffic the entire december? I was planning to go there sometime between the 28th and 30th.

Thanks in anticipation for replies :)

Regards,
Diamond

can anyone tell me what time the bus leaves from Pitea to the boarder and then to Rovaniemi

I want to go there Rovaniemi leaving Pitea on the 22nd dec 2012 or the 22nd but I need to get back to Pitea on the 24/12 by 1500hrs.

I would like to stay in Rovaniemi or near for one night

I have no idea how long it takes to travel up there by bus

can I leave Pitea in the morning and arrive in Rovaniemi by mid afternoon and then leave again the next day and arrive back in Pitea.

If I cannot stay in rovaniemi where is the closest city that has good accomodation that is not expensive

really have this one opportunity to see Rovaniemi and need anyones help

Hi Peter

With the train updates, may I know if there will still be the free buses from Lulea to Kemi, please?

I'm struggling to find the best route for my journey from Murjek (Sweden) to Ivalo (Finland) this June.

Thank you!

Hi Ash!

Have a look here: https://rail.cc/blog/from-kemi-to-lulea-by-bus/
From Kemi you can then go by train to Rovaniemi and then by bus to Ivalo.

Are you travelling with Interrail?
