We are first timers in travelling by train. we would like to take train from Barcelona to Valencia, stay there at least one night and then continue. What train we should take? Do we need two separate tickets? Should we buy them in advance? How early? We are travelling in May. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and hints.

Hi!
Yes, you will need two separate tickets:
- Barcelona to Valencia
- Valencia - Malaga
There are frequent (about hourly) direct express trains from Barcelona to Valencia; called either "Talgo" or "Euromed", depending on the type of train. Both are comfortable and have 2nd class (Turista) and 1st class (Preferente) accomodation.
From Valencia to Malaga, there are no direct trains, but a number of connecting services is available. The best option is to travel with an "AVE" high speed train to Cordoba and change there to Malaga. Again you will find comfortable 2nd and 1st class accomodation.
Tickets are available a maximum of 60 days in advance; often the ticket sale opens just about 30 days in advance. Tickets are available in different price categories: Promo, Promo+ and Flexible.
Promo tickets are the cheapest option but sell out rather quickly and cannot be exchanged or refunded.
For booking I recommend either ACP Rail or Omio, using the following links:

Please use these links before booking your tickets - no extra costs for you but you support our work. Thank you. :)
If you have further questions just ask.
