Hey! I'd like to travel to the following countries and want to know a good/the fastest route to take! I'll be starting in Belgium and ending in Portugal. I'll be spending a month (four weeks) travelling so will spend 2-3 days in each country. Any kind of advice will be helpful, but i definitely need help with the route (eg. which towns to change at etc - i have NO CLUE :| )
1) Belgium
2) Amsterdam
3) Prague
4) Austria
5) Switzerland
6) France
7) Spain
8) Portugal
Then fly back to London.
Thanks a lot! Sarah x

Hi Sarah,

some general tips for your journey:

Brussels - Amsterdam: Travel with the hourly IC services which do not require a reservation (dont travel with Thalys): https://rail.cc/blog/amsterdam-brussels-train/
Amsterdam - Prague: A rather long trip as there is no overnight train available anymore. The direct route would run via Berlin:
https://rail.cc/blog/amsterdam-berlin/ then https://rail.cc/blog/berlin-prague-train/

Prague - Austria: Direct Railjet trains (no reservation required) run every two hours from Prague to Vienna and Graz.

Austria - Switzerland: Night trains to Zurich are available from Graz and Vienna; if you are going to other places in Austria (Salzburg, Innsbruck) it makes more sense to travel during the day (direct trains from Vienna via Salzburg and Innsbruck every two hours).

Switzerland: A very scenic railway however a bit off your route is this one: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
However there are many other really nice cities (Zurich, Bern, Luzern,...) and railways: https://rail.cc/blog/lucerne-and-mount-rigi/

Switzerland - France: Avoid the direct TGV Lyria services as they require quite high reservation fees. Instead, use regional trains across the border.

France - Spain: You are most likely travelling along the Mediterranean coast to Barcelona, read here: https://rail.cc/blog/barcelona-marseille-nice-train/

Spain - Portugal: Night trains are available from Madrid and San Sebastian to Lisbon; alternatively you can travel via Vigo to Porto: https://rail.cc/blog/santiago-vigo-porto/

It is still quite a long time to May 2017, so I'd recommend to think about your route and where you want to go during the next weeks/months, then come back here if you have more questions. :)
