Hi forum,
I have been looking for this for a while but haven't been able to find anything - but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
I'm interested in a database (or other source) of distances between railway stations in Europe. If I remember correctly, this information used to be available in the European Timetable published by Thomas Cook (is it still in the electronic version?), and I'd be amazed if this wasn't somehow still available on the net. Any pointers?
(BTW, I'm not interested in databases for individual countries - I really mean the whole of Europe...)
Thanks in advance for any help!
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I do not know of a comprehensive database or something similar. Besides the data from timetables (such as the Thomas Cook who is said to show actual km instead of tariff km as in most timetables) articles about railway lines often have information about km.

OK - thanks! I guess I have to find an old Thomas Cook timetable then...

Are you looking for any route in particular? I could offer Thomas Cook timetables back to 2003.

Well - I'm trying to find out the distance for the following round-trip:

Trier - Koblenz
Koblenz - Hamburg
Hamburg - Aarhus
Aarhus - Copenhagen
Copenhagen - Stockholm
Stockholm - Luleå
-
Kemi - Tampere
Tampere - Helsinki
Helsinki - St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg - Moscow
Moscow - Warsaw
Warsaw - Berlin Ostbahnhof
Berlin Ostbahnhof - Mannheim
Mannheim - Trier

In fact, I of course don't *really* need to know the distances, but I'm going to do this trip and I thought it would be nice to know - so I started looking. :)

I once gave my father a TC timetable as present, but unfortunately he no longer has it...

These should be all in the Thomas Cook - I can look them up later. :)

That obviously would be great! :) But please don't waste time if you have better things to do!

Fantastic! Many, many thanks!!
Interesting point: this is considerably more than the distance that Google maps gives me for travel by car (at least if I calculated it correctly). I would have expected the train to take a more direct route...
Best,
Sebastian

You're welcome. I had a quick look at it looks like only Kemi - Tampere and Helsinki - St Petersburg could be considerably shorter by car...but who knows.

Looks like an interesting route! :)

Look up the route in IDOS http://jizdenka.idos.cz/IT.aspx?Lang=69

Click more and you will see how many KM in each country - simply add them together and you got it..
Mayby problem with Sweeden, spme routes say just 1 km, but for the rest of Europe I guess it will be ok...

Please note that kilometres displayed at Jizdenka are not actual physical kilometres IMO but rather "tariff" kilometres, for instance Jizdenka shows 198km for Wien - Graz while the actual distance from Hbf to Hbf (central stations) is 212km.
