I was looking at the railcc website to try and get from cologne to milan and then to barcelona by train but i cant tell if we can use the interrail ticket for this route and if we can what is the best route to take? Milan to barcelona is it possible to travel via lyon? and will all of these trains require reservations (we are going in early august) thank you

Hi!
There are many different routes available - on all of them you can use Interrail.
Both routes are quite long and I recommend to make an intermediate stop en route especially from Milan to Barcelona.
From Cologne to Milan, travel to Basel or Zürich first, then take an EC train towards Milan. The EC requires a reservation (11€) for travelling from Switzerland to Italy which can be bought at a station (for instance in Cologne). You can easily avoid this reservation by going to Chiasso (border station) only, then change there to a local train to Milan.
If you have more time, I recommend to travel this route through the Alps: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/ - however the direct route also is really scenic.
From Milan to Barcelona, I would travel along the mediterranean coast and make an intermediate stop in Nice or Marseille. Read here for details about going to Marseille: https://rail.cc/blog/marseille-mailand-train/
From Marseille, there are options available with or without extra reservations - reservation costs will be around 15-20€ but you save some time compared to regular trains.
If you need more detailed help planning your trip, just ask. In return, buy your ticket through our partner link: We are official partners of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Hello thanks for the quick reply! We will stop over at either nice or marseille but when checking the marseille to barcelona trains it says there is only one train leaving at 8:06 and arriving at 12:36 but when checking trains from nice we see trains that go through and stop at marseille at around 11 (for example the train leaving nice at 8:55, stopping at marseille at 11:29 and then continuing on to barcelona also the IC train leaving at 12:21 from nice goes through marseille at 14:59). Does that mean you can get on those trains at marseille then or not, or do you have to start in Nice? it is a bit confusing, thank you for your help

I dont know where you looking for timetables?
Use either [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] or the Rail Planner App http://rail.shop/interrail/app
Using these tools you will find much more connections and can also deselect trains with compulsory reservation to find connections where you dont have to pay extra.

Yeah we used those planners but some trains that go through marseille/ stop at marseille which end up at barcelona arent on the timetable for trains going to barcelona from marseille. is that because they aren't direct and can we still take them? thanks

Please give some examples of trains/timings.
In principle you can use all those trains but for some of them you may need reservations.

Ok i will try, using this link https://rail.cc/en/interrail/marseille-to-barcelona there is this train from marseille to barcelona but it costs a lot of money to reserve and we really dont want to use that. When checking using the rail planner app on my phone there are trains (on 12.08.16) leaving at 8:18 from Marseille st Charles (IC 4754) stop at Montpellier Saint-Roch at 9:53 and then leaving from the same station at 10:37 arriving at Barcelona Sants at 13:34 (RSC 9711). Both say reservation compulsory but they cant also be the 60 euros that the TGV costs. Also a similar route at 10:18 arriving at 12:38. I hope this makes sense sorry there is a lot of information that im trying to look at we just want to try and find a route from nice or marseille that doesnt cost 60 euros to barcelona. thank you for your help!

Oh - there is a mistake; the train departing Marseille in the morning running directly is no TGV France - Italy but a TGV/AVE France - Spain (obviously... :D ) which means that these reservation fees apply: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-france-spain/sncf-tgv/298
So you should calculate with about 15-20€ for a reservation from Marseille to Barcelona.
There are also connections without any reservation, these run via the Cerbere/Portbou border crossing.
