Hello there,
I'm leaving tomorrow with my boyfriend to begin this crazy Interrail adventure and maybe we've been a bit too spontaneous, that's why I come here with a last minute message to ask for some advices about our itinerary.
Here is our planned road for now :
- 15/07 : Nancy (France) > Berlin (day trip)
- 16/07 : Berlin
- 17/07 : Berlin > Copenhagen (night trip)
- 18/07 : Copenhagen
- 19/07 : Copenhagen > Malmö (arriving around 6 PM) then Malmö > Stockholm (night train)
> OR should we skip Malmö and head directly to Stockholm?
- 20/07 : Stockholm
- 21/07 : Stockholm
- 22/07 : Stockholm > Oslo (day trip)
- 23/07 : Oslo
- 24/07 : Oslo > Bergen (day trip with a stop in Myrdal to go to Flam and then come back)
- 25/07 - 26/07 - 27/07: Bergen (hiking around in the region)
> OR should we make Oslo > Stavanger, hiking around there (we noticed some places like Naeroyfjorden which is the narrrowest fjord in Norway, hike around the glacier Briskdalbreen, two hikes : Preikestolen and Kjerajbolten) then Stavanger > Bergen > Myrdal > Flam > Gudvanger (bus) > Laerdal (ferry) > Geranger > Aandalsnes > Dombas > Trondheim (via the Rauma Line)
- 28/07 - 29/07 : Bergen > Andalsnes (is there a train from Bergen to get up north or only buses and ferries?) > Dombas > Trondheim
- 30/07 : Trondheim > Bodo > Moskenes (ferry)
> should we stay a bit around Trondheim ?
- 31/07 - 01/08 - 02/08 : in the Lofoten (don't really know where or how, what's the best to travel there?)
- 03/08 : we want to go back south but we hesitate between two options :
> via the Inlandsbanan train (Sweden), to Stockholm (then we would skip this city on our first days and make Copenhagen > Oslo directly?) and from there, take the ferry that crosses the Aland archipel (Mariehamn) to Turku and then to Helsinki
> OR via trains in Finland along the coast and the lakes... but we would love to go to Aland archipel so we would have to go to Turku, take the ferry back and forth to one of the island, camp a bit and go back. Then Helsinki.
- after that, it's not very well planned : we'll visit Helsinki, take the ferry to Tallinn, cross the Baltic countries (we know it's not in the pass but it's quite cheap and that interests us), make it to Poland, Prague, Wien, and we'll see how many days (and money) we'll still have at this point!
So the main question here is how to go back south from the Lofoten : via Finland or Sweden? Which one would you advise and why? We have a little preference for Finland just because we heard it was so beautiful and because we wonder if the Inlandsbanan is not too touristic? But honestly we don't know so that's why we ask you.
The second question is about Norway : Stavanger or Bergen directly? Do you know any nice hikes there?
The last question is about Lofoten islands : how to travel best and cheap there?
Finally, is hitch hiking quite common or easy in those countries?
For your information, we will have backpacks and some camping material so we are quite autonomous. We want to make a few cities but mostly nature and landscape, we like hiking but we don't want to make super hard hikes, so it will be more easy going on that level.
I know it's very urgent and last minute but if you can take a few minutes to advise us, that would be highly appreciated!!
Thank you so much,
Roxane and Teo

Sounds like the route I'll be making next week!
You may have a look at my schedule: https://rail.cc/en/grand-scandinavian-rail-tour-2016/f12130
Traveling on the Lofoten is completely with the bus. Not that expensive. For all your timetables in the northern parts of Norway: https://www.177nordland.no/index.php?ac_id=280&ac_parent=280
Finding a hostel/hotel will be a point. I had the search for a good one, one month ago. Hotels are about 180 euro per night, hostels (not that many) for about 50 euro per night. Wild camping is allowed in Norway so.. Maybe that's possible?
