Hi all,

On the 5th of July my friends and I were planning on travelling from Desenzano to Nice doing the following route:
12:53 Desenzano - 13:55 Milano Centrale
15:10 Milano Centrale - 20:04 Nice Ville.

We figured we would need to reserve the Milan to Nice train due to the Euros being on but it costs 34€ per person with or without the interrail pass, which seems incredibly expensive since we have all paid more than 250€ for a pass.

Is there any other way of doing this journey in the same time period without spending as much money?

Thanks,
Corm

Hi Corm.
On the route Milan to Nice you have to avoid the direct THELLO train. It is often called EC in the schedule planers. Have a look at this blog post of Katrin, explaining it: https://rail.cc/blog/marseille-mailand-train/

Travel this way:
Desenzano del Garda/Sirmione to Milano: at least every hour by free (for Interrailers) regional train.
For example

Desenzano del Garda/Sirmione dep. 10:23
Milano Centrale arr. 11:35

From Milano you can use an IC train to the city at Italian-French border called Ventimiglia. Free for Interrailers, but a seat reservation is recommended (EUR 3, available at ticket machines in Italy). Ventimiglia to Nice is usually by regional train TER (=free).

Optional, use only regional trains - completely free.
Example:

Milano Centrale dep. 12:25
Genova Piazza Principe arr. 14:18

Genova Piazza Principe dep. 15:43
Ventimiglia arr. 18:12

Ventimiglia dep. 18:33
Nice Ville arr. 19:27

Pete :)
