Hi everyone,

I have just been planning a 2 week interrail trip for August with the following route:

Fly Dublin to Prague

Prague (2 nights) - Bratislava (2 nights) - Budapest (3 nights) - Zagreb (2 nights) - Venice (2 nights) - Rome (3 nights)

Fly Rome to Dublin

Does anyone have any experience with a similar route?

Are there good train routes between these countries? We would like to travel at evening/night time so we don't waste days because of travel.

What interrail pass would work best for this journey?

Thank you,

Evelyn

Hi Evelyn,

a 5in15 Interrail pass https://rail.shop/interrail/global15in1 would be suiting.
For schedules, use a schedule planner - we recommend [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux]
Prague - Bratislava and Bratislava - Budapest are relatively short journeys so you can leave in the late afternoon. No reservation required.
Budapest - Zagreb takes a little bit longer; Zagreb - Venice will take you a whole day. I recommend to travel Zagreb - Ljubljana - Nova Gorica - Gorizia - Venice. No reservation required.
Venice - Rome hourly high speed trains run, 10€ compulsory reservation, can be bought locally at ticket machines using the tariff option Global Pass.

We are official partners of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Hi Flo,

Thank you for the useful information.

I was looking at train connections on rail.cc and it is showing a Zagreb to Venice connection.

Depart Zagreb: 06.50
Arrive Venice: 14.25

This connection seems to have a stopover in Villach.

These hours of travel seems good as we won't miss a full day.

I see you recommend Zagreb - Ljubljana - Nova Gorica - Gorizia - Venice - could this been done overnight?

We had originally thought about stopping in Ljubljana also for 2 days to visit Lake Bled but decided to cut it out as we only have 2 weeks.

I have been reading other posts on this forum and see people mention interrail passes such as the 5 in 15 pass and many have mentioned about travelling after a certain hour to only use one travel day? I'm not too sure how this works?

Thank you again! :D

Hi Evelyn,

the connection via Villach sadly doesnt work like that anymore, you would arrive in Venice two hours later. Check timings here [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] - also keep in mind that the bus from Villach to Venice needs to be reserved (9€).
I'd prefer to go via Bled (also visit the lake, it is worth to stay there one day). https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/

With a Flexi Pass (such as the 5in15) you can make use of the 1900 rule - read more here (scroll down a bit): https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

Hi Flo,

Thank you again for your reply and assistance.

Is the link you provided above the best source for looking up current train times/schedules between countries?

If we use a day to travel from Zagreb - Venice and use multiple trains will this be covered by the 5 in 15 interrail pass?

Best Wishes,

Evelyn :D

plan.rail.cc uses the schedule database also used by railways such as DB (German Railways) and includes most of European rail connections (although not all of them). It is the best tool to look up schedules for your basic planning and is updated regularly.

Zagreb - Venice within one day is of course covered by your Interrail pass and would need just one travel day.

Hi Flo :D

We are here planning our trip now and still a bit confused of how we will travel from zagreb - venice. When I put both cities into the train planner and got the following result:

Zagreb Glavni Kolod. dep 18:38 D 414, E 414, EN 414

Nacht-Schnellzug Direction: Zürich HB
Partially 1st class only (Zagreb Glavni Kolod. --> Dobova), 2nd class only seated accommodation , Please reserve (Zagreb Glavni Kolod. --> Jesenice(SL)), Comfortticket (IRT Integrated Reservation Ticket) (Dobova --> Villach Hbf), Global price , Non-smoker train (Dobova --> Jesenice(SL)), Sleeping-car , Couchettes
Runs as D 414 up to Dobova, then as E 414 up to Jesenice(SL), then as EN 414

Villach Hbf arr 22:43 2

Transfer time 1:20 h

Villach Hbf dep 00:03 4 EN 235

EuroNight Direction: Roma Termini
Subject to compulsory reservation (Tarvisio Boscoverde --> Venezia Mestre), 2nd class only seated accommodation , ÖBB overnight train (oebb.at) (Villach Hbf --> Tarvisio Boscoverde), Comfortticket (IRT Integrated Reservation Ticket) (Villach Hbf --> Tarvisio Boscoverde), Global price , Sleeping-car , Couchettes , snacks + beverages avail. from sleep.-car attendant on part of route (Villach Hbf --> Tarvisio Boscoverde)

Venezia Mestre arr 02:50

Is there any problem with this route? Does is require reservation or extra chargers?

We were also trying to figure out zagreb - ljubliana - nova gorcia - gorizia - venice but it is difficult to plan.

Thank you,

Evelyn :D

This route would be ok however what are you going to do in the middle of the night in Venezia Mestre (Mestre is the station on the main land, not in the laguna)?
The train from Villach would require a 9€ reservation.

To look for connections via Bled - Nova Gorica, use [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] and enter these stations as via stations. :)

Hi Flo,

Thank you again for all of your help. I didn't realise there was a via option that we could use.

I followed your instruction and entered Bled and Nova Gorica into the via station options.

Most of the journeys that it generated are like this:

Zagreb - Ljubljana Avtobusna postaga
(walk 10 mins)
Ljubljana - Jesenice
Jesenice - Nova Gorica
(onward journey by bus or taxi)
Gorizia Centrale - Venezia Santa Lucia

Does this seem correct?

What is the onward journey by bus or taxi? Must we travel far from Nova Gorica to Gorizia Centrale?

If we decided to take the route that goes through Villach how would we reserve the train from Villach for €9? Would this have to be done in advance?

Best Wishes,

Evelyn :D

I dont know why there are buses shown between Zagreb and Ljubljana - there are frequent trains available and the buses would require a reservation. The remainder of the trip is ok.
The stations Nova Gorica and Gorizia are virtually in the same town but on either side of the border - just look on Google Maps for the way or take a bus which leaves from the station square.

The reservation for the train from Villach is available at stations but should also be available on the train.

Hi Flo,

We almost have everything booked for our short interrail trip and are purchasing the passes here tomorrow! :D

We decided to go with the zagreb - villach - venice route as times suited better.

You mentioned a €9 reservation fee. Is it possible to pay this in advance online?

I noticed on the rail cc planner the site oebb.at is mentioned for reservations so I checked this, however it is giving me a price of €29.

Is it better to pay this fee on the day or what would be best to do?

Best wishes,

Evelyn :D

Hi Evelyn,

good to hear, thanks for supporting - please fill in your details here after your purchase: https://rail.cc/en/plus :)

No, you cannot book the seat reservation for the Villach - Venice IC Bus online. Buy it locally at a train station - can be done in Prague already. Then you shouldnt have to worry about getting seats on your connection. ;)

Hi Flo,

I bought my interrail pass just now.

Once I received my confirmation email I followed the link you provided.

It asks for a PNR number but I can't seem to find this. I have an Order ID but can't see any PNR. Where would I find this?

Regards,

Evelyn
