Hi Jamie!

If you want to avoid reservations at all, you have to travel along the following route:
Barcelona - Portbou - Cerbere - Perpignan - Narbonne - Montpellier - Marseille - Nice; then along the coast via Menton - Ventimiglia - Genova - Milan
You have to avoid IC trains with a four-digit train number between Narbonne and Nice, EC trains between Marseille and Milan (IC trains from Ventimiglia to Milan are ok) and all TGV trains.
The best option is to look for schedules for different legs separately; in my opinion it is not possible to travel within one day without reservations though.
I recommend to use [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] however not all timings for July might be online yet.

We are official partners of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

EDIT: the above applies for Milan - Barcelona too, of course...

This would work with 17,50€ for Barcelona - Lyon:

Barcelona Sants 0720 - 1226 Lyon Part Dieu
Lyon Part Dieu 1234 - 1427 Geneve
Geneve 1500 - 1732 Brig
Brig 1745 - 1822 Domodossola
Domodossola 1853 - 2023 Milano Porta Garibaldi

However, the connection in Lyon is not guaranteed! If you miss it you woud have to use a connection two hours later which would include an EC with compulsory reseration (11€) between Brig and Milan.

Overall, I would include an extra stop somewhere along the route, either in Lyon or along the Mediterranean coast (Marseille, Nice) and travel with free trains only.

Could I travel to perpignan and get a high speed train from there ?

You could, but forinstance you would not get the TGV that would get you to Lyon at 12:26 so I dont think you would get to Milan within one day.

Check BUSes for overnight, lve Barce the day before-they may cost around 20 eur with some luck. Try OUIBus (thats FR railweays-but they do not take InterRail!) or eurolines, maybe this route is also on comparabus (a compare-site for all lised buslines, maybe only in French). To whatever town along the route that has low price and looks convenient.
