I need to travel from Barcelona to Madrid on the 6th July and MAdrid to Alicante on the 9th July. What is the best way to get cheap tickets for these trips?
I understand that Renfe is the main site for tickets but when do they release tickets for these dates 12 weeks before? and they have tourist tickets, are these more expensive than a ticket for a spanish citizen? Also the tickets are upwards of 50eu each for the early trains, so surely if i buy a spain railpass from interrail for £103 (3 days in 1 month) and then get 2 reservations at 10eu/£8 then £119 for the 2 journeys is possible and give me the choice of more reasonable times?
Many thanks in advance of any information

Hi!
RENFE is the Spanish passenger rail operator. I recommend buying either directy via renfe or via our partner ACP (licensed RENFE ticket seller) at [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/renfe[/ux]
RENFE has a habit of opening sales for tickets at inconsistent patterns, unlike many other railways. Booking also often is suspended some weeks in advance and only opens one or two weeks before departure again.
An Interrail Spain pass indeed could be an interesting option as especially Barcelona - Madrid is rather expensive even one month+ in advance.

There is a surcharge of 10 eur for all AVE-trips with IR.
There is also a total virtual (NON paper) Spain Railpass-for 8 (or more) trips in 1 month and then you can organise all trips online or even on the Spanish automats in stations when there.
With all these tickets you have the right for a free connecting trip on local=cercanias trains before start or after finish, within a 3 hr timespan. Tickets for these you get on the spot, now also via automats.
