Hello',
Like you probably noticed I'm very new at this forum . My 2 daughters will be traveling through Europe with a Global Pass (interrail) for the whole month of July and a few days in August. Because they're both very busy studying I'm trying to plan the trip for them but I can't get started. Everytime I go to DB Bahn or Thalys or ... I have to pay a lot of extra costs for reservation or the expected night train is cancelled or or or. I can't really get started. I already sort of booked their hostels and a few flights (Brussels to Oslo, Porto to Berlin and ending Rome to Brussels) I really want to support you all by bying all tickets through rail.cc but I do hope you can help me a bit. Thanks in advance. Planning till now :
30-jun Charleroi Oslo 11u30 13u25 PLANE
2-jul Oslo Stockholm 07u32 13u20
4-jul Stockholm Kopenhagen 08u21 13u22
6-jul Kopenhagen Amsterdam 07u43 19u00
9-jul Amsterdam Barcelona 17u18 11u09

Hi Jorgen!
Let\'s have a look at each single leg of the planned trip:
Oslo - Stockholm: The direct trains are Snabbtag high speed trains; reservation is compulsory (62 SEK/7€). You can buy the reservation online either via our partner ACP at [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation/[/ux] or directly via Swedish Railways SJ at sj.se (go to english version of the website, then select a connection and choose the Interrail/Eurail seat reservation option.
There are alternative connections available which can be used without a seat reservation, however these take considerably longer and I would recommend to travel with a direct train.
Stockholm - Copenhagen: There are hourly direct Snabbtag trains to Malmö, some of them continue beyond Malmö to Copenhagen. Again, 7€ compulsory reservation. In practice it would be no problem to take a train to Malmö only and then continue by Öresundtrain to Copenhagen - these are regional trains running every 20 minutes across Öresund.
There are just one or two regular Intercity trains between Stockholm and Malmö, running around weekends. These wouldnt require a reservation. Alternatively it is possible to travel without reservations via Göteborg but again this would consume quite some time. There is also a night train from Stockholm to Malmö-
Copenhagen - Amsterdam: Sadly, the direct night train has been withdrawn. During summer, the international trains from Copenhagen to Hamburg require a seat reservation (~4€). The remaining trains between Hamburg and Amsterdam can be used without a reservation.
Amsterdam - Barcelona: I suppose Belgium is your country of residence? You cant travel through your country of residence with Interrail. So, you would have to travel around Belgium or buy a ticket for the part across Belgium. I\'d recommend to buy an advance fare ticket from Amsterdam to Paris for Thalys either via https://rail.shop/beurope/ or [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational/[/ux] The connection from Amsterdam at 15:17 is currently available for 70€ for 2 Youths (until 25 years).
The reservation for the night train from Paris to the Spanish border (either Latour de Carol or Cerbere) is available at [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation/[/ux]
Current rumours say that the night train Paris - Cerbere will be withdrawn in July, so you would have to use the train to Latour de Carol.
Barcelona - Madrid: AVE high speed trains run at least hourly, 10€ compulsory reservation. Available online via [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation/[/ux]
Madrid - Porto: The night train reservation should be available online at [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation/[/ux]
Berlin - Budapest: Night train reservation is available online at [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn/Berlin-Hbf/Budapest[/ux]
Read here for instructions: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/berlin-budapest-en-477/53
Budapest - Vienna: Direct trains at least every two hours, no reservation needed
Vienna - Venice: Night train reservation should be available via [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation/[/ux]
Venice - Rome: Direct Frecciargento high speed trains every hour, 10€ compulsory reservation. Reservations can be bought locally at ticket machines or online at trenitalia.com

Hi Flo,
Thanks a lot, you have been a great help.
I've booked a lot already but I guess a few of the trips are too soon to book. I can get to Paris - France but it won't work to go further through to Barcelona.
Online prices are currently unavailable for the selected route.
Please call 1-866-938-RAIL (toll free for USA & Canada) to complete your booking.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
Barcelona Sants to Madrid, Madrid to Porto, Budapest to Vienna and Venice s.l. to Rome are to early tobook already I guess.
I'll figure it out unless you have some tips for me
Kind regards
Jorgen

Hi Flo or Wouter or ...
How do you book from Rygge Airport to the center of Oslo with interrail and with NSB ?
Or is there a better way to get to the center of Oslo?
Seems like the Aerobuss in not ok and expensive !

Hi Jorgen!
There are hourly trains from Rygge to Oslo: https://www.nsb.no/rutetider/rutetabell/_attachment/12123?_ts=153818ebe28
A free shuttle bus connects Rygge airport with the train station.
Trains are operated by NSB and are free with Interrail.

Hi Flo,
Thanks a lot for the information till now, I\'ve booked a lot, most through rail.cc
Can you help me with the reservation for Madrid - Porto. I\'m not sure how to fill in the
São Bento Train Station in Porto on the [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] page. Or should I use the Porto Campanha connection which I can\'t probably book for July, 14 yet ?
Thanks (again)

There is no direct train Madrid - Porto, so you wont get a single reservation for that route. What connection do you want to use? Night train Madrid - Coimbra, then day train to Porto or night train Madrid - Vigo, then day train to Porto? Both night train should be available on ACP, though the connecting day trains can only be reserved locally.

Hi Flo,
I guess the Vigo connection is better because otherwise my daughters will be in Coimbra station in the middle of the night :(
Thanks again

OK, many RENFE trains (Spanish Railways) are open for sales at rather short notice. You can only look on renfe.com if the train is available for booking - it then is normally also available via ACP.

Hi Flo,
I received a mail today form SNCF to book my trip from Amsterdam to Barcelona.
It concerned the part from Paris Austerlitz to Toulouse Matabiau.
I need to get further from Toulouse Matabiau to Barcelona Sants, do I need a (free) reservation because if I try to book it and fill in Global Pass I still need to pay 70 Euro for 2

Hi Chiara,
Alternatively you could also go for the free route, that will not require reservations (on your date).
07:55 AM TOULOUSE MATABIAU (France)
10:33 AM PERPIGNAN (France) 12 min. transfer time
10:45 AM
11:28 AM PORT-BOU (Spain) 1hr07 transfer time
12:35 PM
03:09 PM BARCELONA SANTS (Spain)
It is a small 4 hour extra traveling time, but it'll save you apparently 70 euro's :)

As Coryza wrote, I would prefer the connection without extra reservations too. Another alternative would be to go across the Pyrennes via Latour de Carol. Are you planning on taking the night train from Paris to Toulouse?
You are looking for Toulouse - Barcelona reservation at [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation/[/ux]? Reservations for the AVE and TGV trains between France and Spain are not available there; you would have to buy them at a station. The cost is listed here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-france-espana/298

Hi,
Thxs both for the replies, I checked everything on rail.cc and combined this with the Rail Planner app on my Iphone. So I already booked the Amsterdam - Paris through Thalys (Belgium hometown) and sncf for Paris Toulouse.
Now if I read everything correct my daughters can take the free route
07:55 AM TOULOUSE MATABIAU (France)
10:33 AM PERPIGNAN (France) 12 min. transfer time
10:45 AM
11:28 AM PORT-BOU (Spain) 1hr07 transfer time
12:35 PM
03:09 PM BARCELONA SANTS (Spain)
or take the TGV and pay for the reservation (Toulouse - Barcelona: EUR 11,90) in the TOULOUSE MATABIAU station once they arrive there guessing this is the 08u06 TOULOUSE MATABIAU, to 11u21 BARCELONA SANTS
This is correct I hope ??
Not easy being a dad nowadays !!!

Alright...that's not ideal as you could also have booked the night train to either Latour de Carol or Cerbere, both directly at the Spanish border.
Anyway, this would leave you with the following options:
a) Toulouse Matabiau 0848 - 1136 Latour de Carol
Latour de Carol 1347 - 1650 Barcelona Sants
If you are lucky you could catch:
Toulouse Matabiau 0648 - 0947 Latour de Carol
Latour de Carol 1113 - 1412 Barcelona Sants
b) Toulouse Matabiau 0815 - 0957 Narbonne
Narbonne 1157 - 1328 Portbou
Portbou 1433 - 1709 Barcelona Sants
@Coryza: Where did you find the 0755 departure from Toulouse??
c) The direct AVE train with compulsory reservation.

With your last option
c) The direct AVE train with compulsory reservation.
do you mean
take the TGV and pay for the reservation (Toulouse - Barcelona: EUR 11,90) in the TOULOUSE MATABIAU station once they arrive there guessing this is the 08u06 TOULOUSE MATABIAU, to 11u21 BARCELONA SANTS
or probably the
SundaY juli, 10 (D-1)
08u06 TOULOUSE MATABIAU, 11u21 BARCELONA SANTS
08u06 TOULOUSE MATABIAU
11u21 BARCELONA SANTS
Direct RENFE SNCF Reisdetails
Passenger 1 12-25 jaar ESSENTIAL € 35,00
Passenger 2 12-25 jaar ESSENTIAL € 35,00
I don't know the difference between those 2 trains or options

The direct AVE:
Toulouse Matabiau 0806 - 1121 Barcelona Sants
Reservation with Interrail is 11,90€; the Essential fare for 35€ is a regular ticket and has nothin to do with Interrail.

Perpignan 1045 - 1128 Portbou
Portbou 1235 - 1509 Barcelona Sants

Hi,
Should I pay 13 euro for the

Is taking the risk of standing worth the money ?

I wouldnt make the reservation. If you are early enough at the station you normally always find a seat even during peak summer. Only if you are travelling at the end of Sziget festival I'd make a reservation.

Hi,
Probably one of the last questions before leaving on trip ...
I've ordered almost all of my reservations through rail.cc including the trip Madrid Chamartin to Vigo Guixar on July 14 leaving Madrid at 22h14 and arriving the next day in Vigo at 08h46.
The following problem occures, the next train from Vigo Guixar to final destination leaves only 16 minutes later to Porto Campahna (09h02) and it seems it is the only train that day to Porto. Even though it's for free with the global pass you still have to make a reservation in the station.
Are there no other trains (options) to get to Porto (in case they miss the 09h02) and if it is close ¨is the reservation mandatory¨ ??
Thanks for reply in advance ...

Hi Jorgen!
There is a connecting service a few minutes later: http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/Passageiros/horarios/horarios/PDF/r_ir_uc/porto_valenca.pdf
Since reservation for the direct train is free and ridership not too high from what I've heard I guess it shouldnt be a problem to take the Celta even if there is not enough time to get the reservation (maybe they can also try to get it in Madrid already) and after all they also have the option of the later train.
Of course I am always curious about first-hand reports so it would be great to hear from your girls experiences :)

Hi Flo,
Thanks for the quick answer, it's gonna be close because there are no trains between 09h20 and 20h02 but I hope they will catch the 09h02 or the 09h20 and let them buy the reservation in Madrid ...

In case of a delay, they can get off the night train in Guillarei or any other of the following stations already to get the connection towards Porto: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/madrid-pontevedra-hot-851/209 :)

Hi everybody (and Flo especially),
As promised here is my daughters travel log, starting station - ending station - price for reservation for 2
The SJ trains had perfect WIFI (Oslo and Stockholm), the others none not even in the Thalys although they promised it would be available.
The French sleep train (Paris Austerlitz Toulouse-Matabiau) was really dirty, the other trains were clean but very hot to sleep on top (the airco worked perfect for the bottom beds but was not strong enough for the top beds)
The Budapest Keleti-Pu - Wien Central Station connection didn't need a reservation although there were a lot of signs in the station telling you that you should buy a reservation. Conductor told afterwards on the train that you didn't need one.
There is more than enough time to get a free reservation at the kiosk in Vigo Guixar to get the train to Porto Campahna (although 15 minutes does not look long)
All in all a lovely experience and worth doing again !! Ask any question you want, I'll try to give advice !
Be carefull for pickpockets in Rome !!!

Good to read your feedback!
I had the samen wifi experience indeed. As of train traveling, Scandinavië is the most relaxing. And the Thalys, yes the internet is free, but it is just rather slow since it uses 1 satellite connection for the train.
