My boyfriend and me are looking to do this route in June/July this summer. We are starting in Dubrovnik and making our way to Split to start our train journey, we are wanting to do 5 in 15 so basically spending 2 days in each place.

We can't decide whether to stay in Zagreb or Ljubljana (visiting Lake Bled) however the train from Split to Ljubljana is quite epic although we are favouring at the moment as there seems to be a bit more to do.

We are looking at hostelling/Airbnb however in Salzburg it seems super expensive, are there any cheap places to stay in or around the city to make it a bit cheaper? We want to visit the Eagles Nest one day but basically try and make the most of every city in the short amount of time. I can't take too much time off work so we are trying to fit it all in. Looking to spend about £800ish on things to do.

Don't want to spend too much money on reservations, from what I have seen so far they can be pretty expensive

Also if we were looking to go from Split to Ljubljana would we be able to get off at Zagreb for a few hours to stretch our legs etc and then get back on a train to Ljubljana and just use 1 travel day?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi!

Dubrovnik - Split: Frequent buses operate, buy tickes locally.

Split - Zagreb/Ljubljana: You have to go through Zagreb anyway to reach Ljubljana. If you take the morning train from Split, you could spend the afternoon/evening in Zagreb before taking a train to Ljubljana, using one travel day only. Alternatively you could also take a night train Split - Zagreb, using the 1900 rule for night trains, so you would have a full day in Zagreb and use just one travel day too.
Seat reservation (1€) required for the day trains between Split and Zagreb.
The most scenic parts of the routes are between Split and halfway to Zagreb, so you would see them either way. Some parts of the route between Zagreb and Ljubljana, through the Save valley, are quite nice too.
German blog post (translation pending): https://rail.cc/blog/de/zagreb-split-zug-likabahn/

Ljujbljana - Lake Bled: Frequent trains run to Lesce Bled. From there, buses operate to Lake Bled, about 4km away.

Lake Bled - Salzburg: Either go by bus to Lesce Bled again, then by train to Villach (Austria) and on to Salzburg (some direct trains run); or take the train from Bled Jezero, directly at Lake Bled, to Jesenice and change towards Villach/Salzburg there. The journey from Villach to Salzburg is really scenice once again, best views on the left hand side of the train.

Regarding accomodation in Salzburg and a trip to Eagles Nest, have a look at Jugendherbergen too when searching for accomodation and also have a look at accomodation at Freilassing or Berchtesgaden just across the border.

Salzburg - Vienna: Frequent trains operate (3x hourly). You can also travel on private company Westbahn on that route.

Vienna - Prague: Direct trains every two hours.

Prague - Krakow: Either by direct night train or during the day with a change of trains in Katowice.
Reservations required.

Excellent thanks Flo!!

We are just looking at trains from Ljubljana to Salzburg as we will be back there after Lake Bled, the interrail website only shows 3 trains and none direct however other website show plenty of other direct trains. Will our pass not cover these?

Thanks

Mary

Hi Mary!

Your pass covers all trains between Ljubljana and Salzburg; direct or with a change in Villach.

The only direct day train is:
Ljubljana 0923 - 1348 Salzburg

Important to notice... InterRail timetables have updated and the trains from Lubljana (and surrounding stations) in the direction of Villach are not shown anymore - it gives alternatives via Maribor which obviously take much longer. According to Twitter, they'll fix it ASAP.
