Hi all,

I'm new to this site as of today and am looking for some advice.

I have recently been planning an short (2-3 week) interrail trip for this coming summer and am trying to work out the best way to do it.

Three of us are travelling and we all have places we want to see.

I am trying to fit in Italy, Lake Bled and Budapest specifically.

So far I have worked out doing Rome-Florence-Venice and the plan after that was to travel to Slovenia to visit Lake Bled and then to Budapest.

The train timetables etc for Venice-Ljubljana and Ljubljana-Budapest are not very clear to me :| . Has anyone traveled this route before? Any suggestions?

Thank you :D

Evelyn :D

You can very easily plan your part with the rail cc connections or interrail time table planner (mobile app!)

I would definately recommend that if you travel from Venice to Slovenia, go via Tirano/St Moritz/Chur (beautiful mountains sightseeing)/Vaduz/Innsbruck/Lake Bled/Ljubljana. Slovenia/Italy are very well documented in the planners, however when planning a route via Tirano you have to use the Italian planner ([ux]http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en[/ux]) - other planners show it incorrectly!

* Ignore Vaduz from the list :) . Hereby an impression of what you'll see: [ux]http://static1.squarespace.com/static/53969ecbe4b06032a802cebb/54de6e6ee4b0be2d4c8a67bd/54de6fdbe4b026bc4ebd9607/1423863772384/bernina5.jpg[/ux]

From the direction of Innsbruck (when coming from direction chur) you can very easily reach bled jezero/lesce bled (interrail timetable), and continue to Budapest.

Hi Coryza,

Thank you for your help! The scenery really is beautiful!

I looked on that italian planner site you suggested however when I put in Venice to Ljubliana No Travel Solution Found comes up.

I'm sorry I really am brand new to this and just finding it difficult to plan this route. I am probably just not good at navigating and understanding all these websites! :|

Thank you :D

- Keep in mind that there are also direct trains from Venice to Trieste (Italy). There you can take a tram to 'Villa Opicina' - from which direct trains into Slovenia run. However I recommend my part.
* Searching for Trains within Italy: (Venice/Tirano): www.italiarail.com/timetable
* Searching for Trains within Switzerland: (Tirano / St Moritz / Chur / Feldkirch / Innsbruck / Salzburg): [ux]https://rail.shop/oebb[/ux]
* Searching for Trains within Switzerland / Slovenia: (Feldkirch / Innsbruck / Lesce Bled (Bus to Lake Bled) / Bled Jezero (Walk to Lake Bled) / Ljubljana): interrail.eu/plan-your-trip/interrail-timetable

This should work out for you!

Hi Evelyn.
I suppose you fly from Ireland to Italy? And back from Hungary?

Two to three weeks are a lot of time to include the places you want to visit. What you could do is to start in Italy (just as an example, as a detailed planing is only possible if I know your exact travel dates and the time you have the place you want to start and end):

Rome - Milan - Tirano
Schedules are here: [ux]http://plan.rail.cc[/ux]

In Italy you can avoid reservations for high-speed-trains by using IC trains or regional trains. More if we are into the details later on.

From Tirano you cross the Swiss Alps this way (please read the blog): https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/

Then continue for example either via Salzburg to Vienna.
Or via Munich to Prague.

And on to Budapest.

Everything easy to do by day trains - see schedule planer above.

From Budapest go on to Zagreb (also by day train).

Zagreb to Ljubljana (day train) - and on to Lake Bled: https://rail.cc/en/bled/c

The journey from Lake Bled to the Slovenian-Italian border is nice (see photos in the German blog): https://rail.cc/blog/de/trieste-villach-wocheinerbahn/

Your train will end in Nova Gorica (Slovenia). There you take the bus line number 1 to Gorizia (Italy). Exit at the station Gorizia Centrale. Bus is every 15 minutes, schedules here: [ux]http://www.aptgorizia.it[/ux]
Price about EUR 1,50
The city is split into two countries, therefore no passenger trains (it's a historic thing). Go on the Venice by regional train.

More details and help as soon as you know more which places you want to see. :)

Pete :)

Hi!

Some things to add:
Rome - Florence - Venice should indeed be no problem. There are frequent high speed trains which require a 10€ reservation (buy locally at a ticket machine using the Global Pass fare option.
Alternatively you can also travel by regional trains or IC trains - this will take longer but you wouldnt need a reservation. If you want to spend some extra time, you could also include Siena, Perugia or Assisi between Rome and Florence and Bologna between Florence and Venice.

From Venice to Ljubljana/Bled the best options are:
a) train to Trieste, then tramway to Villa Opicina, then train to Sezana and continue to Ljubljana or change to Bled.
b) train to Gorizia, then bus or on foot across town to Nova Gorica (Slovenian part of town), then train to Bled

Ljubljana - Budapest is best by direct train:
Ljubljana dep 0845 - 1734 arr Budapest

Regarding schedule planners, we recommend either [ux]http://plan.rail.cc/[/ux] or the Interrail App.
These include most schedules, for some local lines you have to use the websites of the train operating company.

The option suggested by Coryza would take you via this route: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
You could then reach Bled/Ljubljana or Budapest by night train from Sargans (Switzerland).

We are official partners of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Hi all,

Thank you for all your help on the subject! I will go through all the links and extra information provided and hopefully be able to make a good plan.

At the moment the plan is Rome-Florence-Venice-Slovenia(Lake Bled)-Budapest

Planning to travel in August and to get to Budapest for a few days of the Sziget festival.

I've been trying to think of other routes to do in this short space of time that include Italy, Bled and Budapest. Would love to see as many different places as possible.

Thank you for all the information on travel to Ljubljana, this was my biggest problem!

Evelyn :D
