This year in 2016 I notice that the Interail pass includes travel in my own country to the border. In addition I could get free Interail passes for my 2 children. I prefer getting a flexi pass for either 7 days in a month or 10 days in a month.

We wish to have a scenic train journey in Switzerland however not stay there because accommodation is very expensive. We love the South of France train journey due to its coastal views. We fancy visiting San Sebastian. We wish to stay in Mulhouse and do day trips to Strasbourg, Colmar, Basel, Lucerne and Freiburg in the Black Forest.

We adore Eastern Europe. Places like Prague and Budapest have got more pricey. I remember with much delight Cesky Kromlov. We haven't yet been to Sofia. We live in England.

Hi!

Yes, the new range Global Passes, free passes for children and the possibility to travel to the border for free are welcome news. I've written a short blog post about it here: https://rail.cc/blog/interrail-whats-new-in-2016/

Do you know the Bernina Express route in Switzerland? https://rail.cc/blog/interrail-whats-new-in-2016/

It would be possible to stay overnight in Germany (Freiburg, Singen, Konstanz, Lindau) and travel the Bernina route until Tirano (Italy). I'd also have a look at the Youth Hostel in Pontresina and Albergo Ospizio Bernina for staying overnight.

An other, more direct route across Switzerland would be the Gotthard line from Luzern or Zurich to Lugano - Milano.

Sofia is not that interesting IMO, however you could make a daytrip (by bus) from there to Rila Monasteries; in Bulgaria, think about visiting Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo.

In Czech Republic, maybe have a look at Kutna Hora and Loket; you could continue towards Slovakia (Kosice; High Tatra and Slovensky Ray national parks).

Thank you! :)

Hi Flo. Thanks for your excellent comments. I will have a look at accommodation in Freiburg, Singen, Konstanz and Lindau. Once my German friend lived close to Lake Konstanz. I did an Interail when I was 18 years old starting in Finland and ending in England. It is wonderful I can do an Interail again this time with my children. I will have a look at Kunta Hora and Loket in the Czech Republic. I used to stay in youth hostel dorms. These days I try to get triple rooms. For visiting San Sebastian we are willing to stay in Irun. :D

Personally I really like Lindau - beautiful city on an island in Lake Constance. I can recommend dasmietwerk, a small hostel/hotel a short walk outside the centre.

Have a look at Pontresina Youth Hostel - they also offer rooms for families. Still not cheap but ok fares for Switzerland.
