Hi,

Me and my boyfriend are planning to travel this route in three weeks this summer (july).
Since we are travelling in the summer, should we make reservations in advance for all or just some rides?
I'm also wondering if this is a good route? Any tips? Are there any scenic railways we should catch?

Hi!

Berlin - Amsterdam: https://rail.cc/blog/amsterdam-berlin/ IMO you dont need a reservation - if you have time I recommend to enter the train at Ostbahnhof already (the starting point of the train) instead of Hauptbahnhof (central station) where you can easily find an unreserved seat.

Amsterdam - Brussels: Avoid the Thalys train and travel with the slower Intercity services: https://rail.cc/blog/amsterdam-brussels-train/ - no reservations are possible on these Intercity services.

Brussles - Paris: If time is an issue, take the expensive but fast Thalys train; otherwise I would recommend to travel with slower Intercity trains to Lille, then use either a) a TGV high speed train (reservation available via [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux]) or b) regional trains via Lille. There will be a new blog post about these route until the summer explaining all the options in detail. ;)

Paris - Bern: Again, you have the choice: Fast but expensive Lyria service or slower but cheaper alternatives. I would recommend to buy a reservation for a domestic TGV train from Paris to Mulhouse, then travel from Mulhouse by local train to Basel and from there to Bern.

Bern - Venice: Personally, I would recommend that route: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/ If possible I would also include one night at Ospizio Bernina. From Bern, you can reach Zurich within one hour by fast direct trains; if you have more time at hand, I would recommend to use the slower but more scenic BrĂ¼nig Railway line via Interlaken - Meiringen to Lucerne. In Lucerne you could also make a stop and go to Rigi https://rail.cc/blog/lucerne-and-mount-rigi/ before continuing.

Venice - Ljubljana - Zagreb: no reservations needed.

Thank you! :)
