Hello Everyone!
May someone can help me, I'm planning an Interrail trip in August 2016.
Is it useful to be a member of the hostel or youth hostel association? (Hostelling International etc.) Did you every get Discount or used the Card when you were interrailing?
Thank you very much for your help! :D 8)

Hi Patricia.
In my eyes, the Youth Hostel international member card is not necessary. You will find hundreds of private hostels in all the European cities. Have a look at websites like for example [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux]
Also check the country details (section accommodation), where you will find recommended hostels: https://rail.cc/en/countries
I can give you an example for Germany: non-Germans do not need a hostel card, but have to pay EUR 3 extra per night as non-members. But prices of youth hostels in Germany are high, compared to private hostels and cheap hotels.
If you like, post your planed route in the forum and we can have a look on possibilities to stay overnight.
Have snowy (?!) days in Switzerland, Pete :)

Dear Pete,
Thank you for your quick and helpfully answer! :D
That's great to know and I will check the link.
We want for sure visiting following cities:
Amsterdam, Berlin, Köln, Prag, Budapest, Firenze and maybe Warsaw and Monaco. We may also like to couchsurfing and of course hostels etc.
Until today we haven't snow under 1'400 metres! What a shame but one hour ago it's started snowing in Interlaken! :D :D
Have a great day, Patricia

Hey...
One thing I forgot. I often rent an apartment via Airbnb - also nice, cool and cheap. Check this link here and you even get a voucher of some Euros: [ux]https://rail.shop/airbnb[/ux]
:)
Amsterdam is really expensive concerning hostels. I recommend to book in advance.
Instead of Monaco (not a lot to do there), I recommend to stay in Nice or Marseille.
Check these links:
Nice places around Marseille: https://rail.cc/en/marseille/nice-place/c

Krakow is also possible to include. Depends on how much time you have. :)

About the only area where such a card is useful/needed is Scandinavia. But also there you should be able to find hostel enough-though you have to pay more.
Just compare the sites hihostels.com (with member-rates) and general sites like [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] etc what they offer and how much prices for same date/same place differ.
The HI-hostels also have a scheme: you get a card with fields/stamps and after 6 you are member for the year. THis may cost just a eur or so more as direct membership.
