Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has useful advice on whether or not to book hostels in advance?
We're thinking of just booking them a few days in advance as we go along.. would this be a good idea???

Thanks for the help!! :)

hi...

this is a good idea... do not book to much in advance. otherwise you are completely fixed on your route, and that's boring if you meet for example other interrailers which you join for some days...
so, don't book to much in advance but for the big cities in the summer months it is recommended two or three days in advance.

have fun,
Peter

On one hand, lıke Peter saıd, one of the best thıngs about ınterraılıng ıs the freedom to go whereever you want, whenever you want to. Havıng your route planned out day by day before you leave mıght be rather borıng.

On the other hand, you mıght not care much about freedom when you wander around ın Fırenze on 6am on a Saturday mornıng, your backpacks gettıng heavıer every mınute, beıng turned down at hotel upon hotel because they are all out of room. Thıs happened to me. :) (and ın the mıddle of Aprıl, mınd you, far from peak season).

So, a pıece of advıced I`ve seen quıte a few tımes around here: When you arrıve ın a cıty, decıde how long you want to stay and where to go next. Then fınd and book accomodatıon at your next destınatıon, at least 2 or 3 days ın advance (maybe longer ın peak season), and reserve traın tıckets ıf necessary.

Yes, I agree. When you do an inter rail you cannot book in advance your accommodation. Anyway if you travel in high season it is better to book in advance at least in the most popular cities.

When I did my interrail in August 2006 I and my friends booked our hostels in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Rome and London through the group accommodation service of [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] .
We had to pay in advance only the 10% so even if we could make to go to London anymore we got our reimburse. Also they made sure that we were all together in the same dormitory, which was very good for 8 friends travelling all together. :D
Nevertheless if you travel solo you may not care to share the room with other people so in that case it is not so necessary to book in advance.

Me and my friend are travelling in april its our first time and are not currently planning on booking any hostels, however would it be wise to book our first destination in advance so we definatly have a place to stay for the days? thanks

hej ... :)
I recommend to buy a reservation for your first stay... so you have a relaxing start of your tour... and for the first stop on your tour, you know the dates... so nothing will change. :)
have fun, Peter :)
