I'm starting an interrail trip next month, and I wasn't taking a passport with me. But now all the news about some countries closing its borders (France and Belgium, at least) left me doubting my choice.
What do you think? Is it better to play it safe, as we don't now know if Schengen is gonna last?
Thank you in advance!

Hi!
You will need a passport or a national ID card on your trip, as on the one hand the passport or ID card number will be printed on your Interrail ticket and on the other hand it would be very unconvenient not to have the passport/ID card with you in case of a random check.

Thank you! :)

That was not the question, sorry for the misunderstanding.
I know that taking an ID is mandatory, I was just wondering about the passport, since after the Paris attacks, some countries decided to close its borders.

Well, at least in Schengen and in most other European countries too a valid national ID of a Schengen country is regarded equivalent to a passport.
Personally I always travel with my passport as it is unusual to have a national ID in Austria. I recommend to check the website of your ministry of foreign affairs for any information but IMO you will be fine with the ID card.

Well, currently you can either bring your passport or your national ID card with you and both are accepted in case of identity/border controls. Also if you go to a non-schengen country an ID card will be accepted.
