Hello,

When I first heard about Interailing it sounded like the best thing ever! Get a train ticket that lets you go anywhere in Europe without additional costs, leave with no plans and just jump between trains as you choose..

As I do more research into it it seems its not so simple, or at least that's what I fear. Is it possible to go without plans and still manage to get onto trains that would need reservations? I mean, how often do they get fully booked? Can I just role up to a train station and jump on a train going to a different country, what percentage of train companies in Europe does the pass cover? Maybe theres just more planning involved than I'd thought!

maybe someone who has done a no plans Interail trip can help me :)

Cheers,
Ross

Hi Ross!

It is still possible to travel very spontaneously with Interrail - and I would say that finding proper accomodation at short notice can be more difficult than finding a seat on a train.
Of course, there are a few countries where you have to reserve basically all long distance trains: Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Romania and Poland. While it is normally no problem to get short notice reservations in Italy, Portugal, Romania and Poland, travelling through France and Spain can sometimes be complicated.
In all other countries you dont have to worry much about reservations. In Sweden and Hungary, there are a few trains which you have to reserve but there are still good alternatives available and in all other countries you can basically hop on whenever you like.

The pass covers the major national railway companies in each country plus often also a number of private railways. If you do a classic trip visiting capitals etc you wont have to bother with validity issues on private companies etc...

We are official partners of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)
