Hi all,

I will interrail this summer, most likely for a month, and I would like your advice. I haven't done anything like that before and might seem a bit all over the place with this post.

My current route draft is...
Muenchen - Venedig - Ljublana - Zagreb GLAVNI KOL - Sarajevo - (>By Bus) Belgrade - Sofia - Bucharest - Budapest - Warszawa - Berlin - Frankfurt

Even if I spent 2 days per city I would still have some time outstanding.
Initially I had some more countries in mind (Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece) but it seems that either the trains weren't well connected or didn't really fit within the above itinerary. Any advise how to maybe incorporate any of these countries? Or alternatively would you recommend any other cities to add on my current intinerary?

I was thinking of incorporating some time close to the beach as well. What do you think of Varna (Bulgaria)? Any other suggestions? Reputated cities like Split (Croatia) seemed awkward as I would travel back and forth to Zaghreb.

I'm the kind of person who enjoys walking / hiking in order to see scenery, so I wouldn't mind at all dropping cities in order to see something naturally nice (e.g. Black Bled, Castles in Transylvania?).

For diversity reasons I wouldn't mind doing some sports as well. I heard that Bosnia is famous for rafting for example?

It seems like a lot of various requests, but I am rather quick on my feet so I can get city sightseeing done fairly quick.

Any advise would be very welcome.

Eric

Hi Eric!

I think for a month-long route this is a rather good basis which you could extend at some points whenever you please.
Firstly, what I always recommend is including this really fine route across the Swiss Alps: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
You cant get from Munich to Venice within one day then but you could either stop somewhere along the way in Switzerland or in Milano and maybe visit the Expo.

When you are in Sarajevo, you could think about taking a bus to Montenegro instead - you can go hiking (Zabljak/Durmitor National Park), rafting (Tara Canyon) and to the beach (Budva, Kotor, Sutomore), then take the spectacular route to Belgrade.

From Belgrade, it would be no big deal to include Macedonia and Greece - the only downside would be that you have to get up quite early to catch the only train from Skopje to Thessaloniki (which is the night train from Belgrade): https://rail.cc/blog/belgrade-thessaloniki-train-video/

In Greece, you could make a quick tour to the Meteora monasteries: https://rail.cc/blog/train-ferry-greece/ before heading from Thessaloniki to Sofia.
In Bulgaria, you could think about going to Rila national park as well as Plovdiv and somewhere on the black sea. I've been to Burgas which is quite nice but you should have a look at Sozopol and Nesebar - but keep in mind that the Gold Coast between Burgas and Varna is rather touristy nowadays.

In Romania you could have a look at Brasov and for hiking maybe go to Predeal in the Carpathians.
On the way to Warsaw you could also think about making a detour to Slovakia and the High Tatra national park. During summer there should be buses from Poprad to Zakopane in Poland from where you could easily continue to Warsaw.

Thank you! :)

However IR is a very bad buy for this trip if you want/need the 1 month version. See what balkan Flexi can offer-in the South east part of Europe, and then get the cheap Bahn.de Europesparpreise to go there and back-or fly. Countiries like SK and CZ and in anothe form PL, where I amnow, also offer very cheap local ride-at-will tickets for the summer. And in the Balkans the bus is often a much better alternative.
