I seem to be constantly running into problems with my Spain/Portugal trip planning.
Trains that I had previously identified appear to have disappeared.
I had previously selected ATR 9218 from Madrid to Granada (direct) departing 0905 and arriving Granada 1330 on Friday 17th July 2015, however I can no longer find that departure or any direct trains from Madrid to Granada on Fridays. Can anyone assist?

The line from Antequera to Granada is closed until August to allow works on the new parallel high speed line. This affects the direct Madrid - Granada Altaria services as well as the Sevilla and Algeciras to Granada MD services which are all replaced by buses between Antequera Santa Ana and Granada.
I dont know if and how reservations for passholders are available now for this route.

Thank you flow for this very important information. Hopefully we will be able to get the connection that we need to get to Granada to fit in with our already booked accommodation and Alhambra tour.

Hm. You would have an alternative travel route via Guadix, an apparently very interesting city itself:

Madrid Atocha 0819 - 1308 Guadix
Guadix 1616 - 1728

The inital connection with the direct train would now look as follows:

Madrid Atocha 0935 - 1155 Antequera Santa Ana, this is the AVE to Malaga
Antequera Santa Ana 1215 - 1330 Granada by bus

Thanks very much flow. Your information on the 9:35am to Malaga and the bus option looks like the way we will go. This gets us into Granada not much later than we had planned with the direct train. Will the journey from Granada to Seville on 20th July also be disrupted by the engineering works? Will buses be needed on this journey as well?

Yeah, all trips from Granada to Sevilla/Algeciras/Madrid will be affected and buses will replace trains until Antequera Santa Ana.

Hi! Again
I assume that the buses will be at the Antequera station to meet incoming trains to Granada and at Granada station to take any passengers with tickets to Seville as far as Antequera?

Yes.
This is the correspondant information from RENFE, sadly in Spanish only: http://web02.renfe.es/u13/MTR/UltimaHora.nsf/Leer%20Noticia%203A?OpenAgent&id=C033E8192AFBE8F6C1257E1900342583

Hi
Another question on the same topic.
To book the journey between Madrid and Granada, do I continue to try to book that route or do I book a reservation on the Madrid - Malaga 9:35am train, getting off in Antequera and getting the bus from there to Granada? Will my Madrid - Malaga reservation be accepted on the bus to Granada?

Thanks for any further info.

OK, I checked with RENFE. They said that it is required to book a reservation for the whole part Madrid - Granada, including the replacement bus.
Sadly this seems not possible to do neither online nor at railway stations outside of Spain (I just checked at my local station).
This means that you would either have to wait to get your reservation until you arrive in Spain or book the alternative journey via Guadix. :|

Thank you Flo for this very valuable information. I will wait until we arrive in Barcelona in early July and make our booking then. Thanks again.
