Our trip is approaching and were ready to purchase our one way tickets from Treis Karden to Paris on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.

There will be 5 of us, one person over 25 and 4 under 25. I checked the Bahn.de website and found a ticket for 59 EU leaving at 0800 and arriving in Paris at the Est station. This doesn't seem unreasonable to me, as we want to leave early and arrive in Paris in time to look around that day.

But, I want your professional advice first! :) . How does this sound?

Hi.
Definitely a good price as you book only short time in advance. I recommend to book as fast as possible to still get these good prices. The connections at 12:33h is even cheaper, only EUR 39. Nice! :)
If you like to support the railcc project, please buy your tickets via https://rail.shop/bahn/Treis-Karden/Paris/0800/2005
Same price for you, official booking engine of Deutsche Bahn, Bahn-Bonus-Punkte, Bahn-Login - but you support railcc. Thank you!! :)
And finally: in my eyes the best connection is via Saarbrücken like you selected. You could also check Treis-Karden to Luxembourg via [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] and from there a TGV to Paris [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux] - but will usually take more time and is more expensive.
Pete :)

As a follow up question, we are planning on day trips from Treis Kardem to Cochem, Trier, Koblenz and other small towns. My plan was to purchase train tickets locally the day of the excursion. I'm starting to get nervous though, and thought I should check that this is a solid plan.

What if we take a day trip to Luxembourg? Would you suggest a pre-purchase ticket for this? We haven't solidly decided on this location, it's just an option.

Thank you!! I really do appreciate your advice. I had posted back in December when we were still planning and it was very helpful.

Hi.
If you travel within the German state Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz) to which the cities Cochem, Trier and Koblenz belong, I recommend to use the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket (Rhineland-Palatinate-Ticket) for up to 5 persons. Available at ticket machines at stations. You can use it on local and regional trains. Use the schedule planer here http://plan.rail.cc/?l=en and select the option only local transport.
Details and prices about the ticket here - no need to pre-book, it never sells out, buy it at a ticket vending machine. Everyone will be able to help you if you have problems with the machine, as it is a very common type of ticket.
[ux]http://www.bahn.com/p_en/view/offers/national/regional/laender-tickets/rhineland-palatinate-ticket.shtml?dbkanal_007=L01_S02_D002_KIN0001_index-region-rhlp_LZ001[/ux]

Note: Trier and Koblenz are very close to Treis-Karden - therefore a normal ticket bought at the day of travel at the ticket machine at the station should be fine - but depends on the number of travellers.
The Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket starts from EUR 24 for one person (valid from Monday to Friday from 0900h in the morning to 0300h at night), every additional person is +EUR 4.
Treis-Karden to Koblenz is available via local public transportation: [ux]http://www.vrminfo.de[/ux]
One way Treis-Karden to Koblenz is EUR 9,50. Return is EUR 19 per person. If you are two or more persons, a Mini Group Ticket might be the best choice: [ux]http://www.vrminfo.de/en/tickets-and-fares/ticket-offers/leisure-ticket/[/ux]
Treis-Karden to Koblenz is Preisstufe: 8

Treis-Karden to Cochem: is Preisstufe 3 and EUR 3,65 per person one-way. Same calculations like above to Koblenz.

Treis-Karden to Trier is EUR 15,70 per person. Better to use the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket.

Conclusion:
Treis-Karden - Cochem: if this is the only trip on one day, buy single tickets locally at the ticket machine. Per person return = EUR 7,30
Treis-Karden - Koblenz: the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket is in my eyes the best choice if traveling with two or more persons, for example adding some extra stops along the river Rhine. First person return = EUR 24, every additional person (return) +EUR 4
Treis-Karden - Trier: buy the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket. First person return = EUR 24, every additional person (return) +EUR 4

Additional information:
If you are in Koblenz, definitely continue along the River Rhine to Loreley, Sankt Goar, Bacharach - all this is possible by Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket. If you like return from Bacharach to Koblenz by ship: [ux]http://www.k-d.com[/ux]

Treis-Karden to Luxembourg: there is a special edition of Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket available at ticket machines called: Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket Lux. Starting from EUR 30 (instead of EUR 24). Same conditions like the standard Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket. Definitely the best choice on this route for you!
First person return = EUR 30, every additional person (return) +EUR 4

I hope this information will help you. By the way a very lovely corner of Germany you selected! :)

Pete :)

Thank you again for your excellent information Pete! I've successfully purchased our tickets to Paris, and feel much better about the daily tickets. I haven't been to Germany for 25 years, but the trains were so easy to use and inexpensive at that time I wasn't even worried. Then I started to think about it too much, and started to stress :'(

I'm very excited to see this part of Germany. I have been on a short Rhine cruise by Heidelberg, but I've never been down this branch of the river. I wanted my daughters and nieces to see the less touristy/commercial side of Germany. It looks beautiful and we are so excited!
