We are an Irish couple with three kids, boy (17), girl (14) and boy (5). So far we have booked flights to Malaga which get in late on June 2nd with hotel Holiday Inn Express Malaga Airport for that night and AirBnB in Seville for the following three nights. Then we have booked AirBnB Florence on 13th June, Rome 14-17 June and Munich 21-24.

I have listed the dates and booked cities below. We plan to explore Cordoba and maybe Granada from Seville and then move to Barcelona. Is there any point in stopping in Madrid for an afternoon. We don’t really want to trundle from one museum to another or to slavishly tick off tourist hotspots. We would prefer to simply soak up the atmosphere of these cities and visit important, convenient (ideally free – at least for the under 18s) attractions where appropriate. We are certainly interested in the art, architecture, music and heritage of Europe (but don’t want to drown our children in it). Would it make sense to fit in an overnight on the train (four berth is enough) and where does this fit? Could we fit in some of the special scenic routes (e.g. in the Barcelona – France) or Tirana-Chur…?

Dates which are not booked have ‘?’

02/06/2015 Malaga
03/06/2015 Seville

Hi!

Have you already thought about what kind of tickets you want to get?
A 10 in 22 Interrail could be an option although I think that you should also look into regular tickets - bought in advance for longer trips and bought locally for shorter (day) trips and excursions.

I've never been to Madrid except for changing trains so I cant comment on the citys values but IMO it would be a tad too much to rush through for a few hours with the kids.
A possible night train trip could be Granada - Barcelona; it should be possible to get a ticket/reservation for your youngest to sleep in one of the parents beds (there are only 4bed cabins available).

If you can cut down your stay at some other places you should think about including the Petit Train Jaune in the Pyrennes: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/
You could go Barcelona - Latour de Carol - Petit Train Jaune - Villefranche - Perpignan within one day and continue to Marseille or Nice the following day.

3 days in Venice might be a bit much; I would also think that it would be better to go there after Rome so you would have one week for the section from Barcelona to Florence which would be reasonable.

Definitely include the Bernina route (Tirano - St Moritz - Chur); however do this as part of travelling from Italy to Munich. The route is described here: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
If you want you could also stay overnight en route, for instance here: https://rail.cc/en/ospizio-bernina/albergo-ospizio-bernina/l1139
