Hello myself and my partner are travelling the following route from mid-june to mid-july:
Belgrade-Budapest 7am-3pm EuroCity
Budapest-Vienna 6am-8am RailJet
Vienna-Prague 9am-1pm RailJet
Prague-Berlin 10am-3pm EuroCity
Berlin-Hamburg 10am-12am ICE
Hamburg-Amsterdam 7am-1pm ICE (x2)
These are all optional bookings (budapest to vienna is the very early one all others compulsory)
We have never been and were wondering whether we should reserve any of the journeys?
On the planner it said recommended to reserve Hamburg-Amsterdam.
We debated using the interrail reservation service but at 8 euros a train when the reservations are 3-4euros it doesn't seem worth it.
Other options include using the DB Germany train website but that wont allow me to buy the seat only fare?!
Or to buy at the train station three days before departure (when we arrive at each location), is this a good idea and is it simple to do?

Hi!
I would not bother getting reservations for any of these trips.
Belgrade - Budapest and Budapest - Vienna: You enter the train at the beginning of the journey which means if you are early enough at the station you can choose from all seats.
Vienna - Prague and Prague - Berlin: Although these trains originate at other stations, many people get on/off the train in Vienna and Prague and you normally wont have troubles finding a seat as well.

I dont quite understand what you mean by compulsory here?
You cannot make seat reservations for international trains on [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] and for regular seat reservations I would also not bother using the interrail.eu reservation service.
If you want to make reservations for any of these trains it is sufficient to make them one day or so prior to departure directly at the train station. The reservation fare depends on the country you make the reservations in and varies between 2€ and 4,50€.
railcc is official partner of interrail.eu - to support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Thank you so much so the ICE trains should be fine without reservations too?
Regarding the compulsory budapest to veinna trains, all the direct RJ trains that are fast 2:30hrs instead of 4-8hrs are compulsory apart from the first train of the day. Would you recommend getting this train?

Yeah, the ICE trains are going to be fine as well. If you are going to purchase through our partner link via interrail.eu at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] (use this link right before the purchase) I can have a closer look at the exact connection too. :arr: https://rail.cc/en/plus
The Railjet trains from Budapest to Vienna and onwards do not require a reservation, regardless what a stupid schedule planner might say.
Reservation is only compulsory for domestic journeys within Hungary and that tends to get mixed up sometimes...
Also, I would recommend getting on the train at https://rail.cc/en/budapest/budapest-keleti-pu/l371 Keleti station instead of Kelenföld: Keleti is the departure station and Budapest's central station - Kelenföld is in a suburb and it is unlikely that it is more conveniently located for you.
