Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip this summer across Europe with my partner and 10 Year old daughter.

We have a rough itinerary but was wondering if anyone could suggest anything more/less to add to it. Are the number of days sufficient?

This is what we have planned so far:

Amsterdam (2 days) - Cologne (2 Days) - Frankfurt (2 Days) - Berlin (3 Days) - Munich (3 Days) - Salzburg (3 Days) - Budapest (2 Days) - Split (3 Days with Day trip to Plitvice) - Ferry to Ancona then train straight to Rome (3 Days) - Florence (3 Days with day trip to Pisa) - Bologna (2 Days) - Lake Como (3 Days) - Milan (3 Days with flight back home)

Any help will be much appreciated :)

Hi!

Your draft itinerary looks good so far...just a few things I would add/change.
IMO you could skip one day each in Frankfurt, Salzburg, maybe also Munich, Milan and Lake Como. Instead I would think about adding a third day in Budapest and making at least a day trip to Switzerland, for instance to Bernina Railway: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/

From Salzburg you could make a day trip to Salzkammergut: Train to Attnang-Puchheim, then train to Gmunden - Bad Ischl - Bad Goisern - Hallstatt - Bad Aussee. Or take a bus from Salzburg in direction of Bad Ischl which stops at Wolfgangsee.

What would be really nice is the Budapest - Split summer season night train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/budapest-split-g1204-b15800/132
But it will be hard to get a reservation...best option would be to ring up Deutsche Bahn calling center, they are in theory able to book it.

Personally I would skip Pisa and visit Assisi, Perugia, Lucca, Siena or the Cinque Terre instead.

When travelling from Cologne to Frankfurt, invest a bit of time and travel the old route via the Rhine valley via Koblenz which is a quite scenic route - opposed to the direct high speed line. Sit on the left.

To support the free information and the forum on railcc, please be fair and buy your official Interrail pass via our railcc partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Hi Flo,

Thanks for your suggestions, we have altered the draft taking into account what you have said. Can you give some advice on the new itinerary.

Amsterdam 2 Days - cologne 2 Days - Frankfurt 1 Day - Munich 2 Days - Salzburg 2 days (Day trip to Bad Ischl) - Innsbruck 1 Day - Berlin 3 Days - budapest 3 Days - Split 2 Days - ancona straight on the train to rome 3 Days (Day trip to Cinqueterra - Perugia 2 Days (Day trip to Assisi) - Florence 3 Days (day trip to Siena) - bologna 2 Days - lake como 2 Days - Milan 4 Days with day trip on the Bernina Railway.

I wanted to ask about the connections if I were to buy point to point tickets from Amsterdam - Cologne, Cologne to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Munich, how much would the connections cost roughly? Also regarding the night trains - Innsbruck to Berlin, Berlin to Budapest and Budapest to Split - how do we go about buying the reservations.

Another quick question - how do we get the discount for the ferry booking from Split to Ancona?

Is there anything else you can suggest about the itinerary?

Thanks in advance :)

You can buy tickets for point to point tickets from our affiliate link from Deutsche Bahn (German Railways): [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]
For Amsterdam - Cologne you can also check at our affiliate link from Dutch Railways at [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational[/ux]

There is no Innsbruck to Berlin night train; if you want you can use the München - Berlin train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/munich-berlin-cnl1246/29

Berlin - Budapest nigh train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/berlin-budapest-en-477/53

You can make reservations for both night trains online, follow the links for a how-to.

Budapest - Split night train reservations are not available online, you would have to buy them at a station. As explained above it should be possible to book through Deutsche Bahn booking centre as well.

There is no discount on Split - Ancona ferries.

I would not make a day trip to Cinque Terre from Rome - if you want to do this, go from Florence, which is a much shorter trip (4h vs 2h).
