Hi again!

I just found out my earlier interrail route (Denmark to Barcelona via Paris) is not really what I wanted, and the flight ticket from Spain to Denmark is very expensive due to the Easter days! :(

Instead of travelling towards the South, I have decided to take a night train from Copenhagen to Zurich and a night train from Vienna to Berlin and then a regular ticket back to Copenhagen.

I will still buy a 5/10 global pass (through this site when I have all the details set! 8) ), but I am absolutely lost in what to see on my way from Zurich to Vienna. I thought about visiting Mount Rigi, but nothing else.

I will have 3 travel days to do the journey, so does anyone have an idea for what to see on the way and/or an idea for a route? :)

My plan is to leave Denmark the the 23th of March arriving in Zurich early the 24th, and that means I have to take the night train from Vienna to Berlin the 1st of April ;)

Hi!

Thanks for supporting! We can now sell the Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] without any shipping fees. :)

First of all, the night train Copenhagen - Basel has been sadly withdrawn last December. :(
If you want to travel overnight your only option would be the Hamburg - Zürich night train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/hamburg-zurich-cnl-479/25

If you want to travel that way, you should also compare the price of a Europe Special Ticket from Deutsche Bahn [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] from Copenhagen to Basel Bad Bf for the night train and starting with IR from there - this would save you one travel day.

In Switzerland, Mount Rigi would definitely be interesting - have you seen the blog post? https://rail.cc/blog/lucerne-and-mount-rigi/
Other nice cites to visit would be Bern, Fribourg, Geneve, Chur,...if you have time you could also include a trip with Rhätische Bahn: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/

If you choose to go with Bernina Railway you could continue to Italy: Milano - Venice, then either night train to Vienna or continue via Trieste or Gorizia to Slovenia: Bled and Ljubljana, then Graz - Vienna.

Another option would be to take the Zürich - Budapest night train...then maybe a trip to Zagreb and/or Ljubljana before going to Vienna. Or Prague, Bratislava, Krakow...everything is possible ;)

Do you want to spend some time in Berlin before you go home? If you need a ticket Berlin - Copenhagen have a look again at [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] for saver fares of Deutsche Bahn.

Hi Flo! - Thanks for the quick response!

Little mistake in my previous post - I will take the night train from Hamburg to Zurich :)

My idea for Mount Rigi came from that blog post! And I've also looked at the route to Milano, but I find it a bit confusing the way it is explained :| Maybe you can simplify the cheapest route where I can avoid some of the extra fares?

I've been in Venice, Slovenia and Croatia several of times before, and will go there on another interrail with friends later this summer, so I would like to avoid those destinations.

So far, my route look like this:

Fredericia (DK) – (Hamburg) – Zürich (Monday: 23/3) Dep: 15.07 (Arr: 18.49 Dep: 20.11) Arr: 08.33 - 24/3
Zürich – ? (26/3) Dep: ? Arr: ?
? – ? (28/3) Dep: ? Arr: ?
? – Vienna (30/3) Dep: ? Arr: ?
Vienna – (Berlin) – Copenhagen (Wednesday: 1/4) Dep: 22.12 (Arr: 09.08 Dep: 11.25) Arr: 18.14 - 2/4

Not sure how to plot in Mount Rigi and also a trip to Milano? :o

I don't fancy rushing around, as I'm looking for a quiet trip where I can enjoy the beautiful nature and hopefully silence!

I wont spend time in Berlin, as I've also been there before! :)

Thanks Again!

Ah ok...oh and I saw on your profile that you're from Fredericia - quite handy to get across the border. ;)

So...personally I would start earlier and spend the day in Hamburg. Or visit Lübeck or some other place in the area where you havent been yet.

Hm...I will try to simplify the blog post - it is a bit old and complicated, I know. I will make two different posts with one only explaining the route. Anyway, it is really simple - you can just go Zürich - Chur - Samedan - Pontresina - Tirano - Milano and avoid the Bernina Express or Glacier Express services which would require a reservation. You can hop on all other trains and dont need to pay extra.

So..you already need three travel days for Fredericia - Hamburg - night train to Zurich and Vienna - Berlin - Copenhagen.

What you could do is to go to Mount Rigi right after you arrive from the night train, spend the day there and go back to Zürich in the evening. This way you would make the most out of the second travel day.
Anyway, if you are looking for quiet, Bernina Pass may actually be better suited as Rigi is usually quite crowded with tourists - of course you find some peaceful places there as well but in general it has a much more touristy feel to it.
So, you could stay overnight at Bernina Pass at 2250 metres at Albergo Ospizio Bernina: https://rail.cc/en/ospizio-bernina/accommodation/c
I can really recommended it. :) You could then spend an entire day hiking/walking in the area. Humm...I just thought that since you will be travelling in March there will be quite a lot of snow still at Ospizio Bernina... :os

If you want to do Rigi and Bernina both this would leave you with just one travel day to continue to Vienna - this is no problem but you would have to travel during the day.

Other places in between Zürich and Wien would be Salzburg and the Salzkammergut (Bad Goisern, Hallstatt,...); or take the night train from Zürich to Graz, spend the day here and continue to Vienna in the evening. :)
