I plan to end driving thru Austria in Villach, and then catch a train (on May 12)to Venise. The OBB site now shows unavailable for the only direct train (10:50AM). Does this mean it is fully booked already?
There is a 6:50AM bus, but it goes to Tronchetto; then it shows a figure that makes me think you need to walk to the Santa Lucia station; is that correct?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

I dont know why the train currently is not available. However you should be able to book it on the website of Trenitalia.
Another alternative would be to take the Micotra train from Villach to Udine and change there to a regional train to Venezia.
The bus station Tronchetto is not far from Santa Lucia: https://rail.cc/en/venice/venice-tronchetto-bus-station/l1002

Those micotra trains are RES-free. Just buy ticket or hop on with pass.
Note that you say you want to take train out and not stay in VNZ? In that case it makes no sense to go into the old town and come back same 5-6 kms via the dam. Change in Mestre. That bus stops beside the stazione there. IF you have ever been into VNZ-old town, you must have noted that roads are quite scarce there.
