Hi, I have noticed that Glacier Express is an extra fee even if you have a Global Eurail Pass. However,am I to assume that the pass is valid on regional trains that run the same route? In other word are there regional trains that are free on the Glacier Express route? I was interested in the Brig to Zermett route, thanks

Hi!

The Glacier Express is jointly operated by two companies: RhB (Rhätische Bahn) and MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn). While you can travel on RhB network for free with Eurail, MGB only grants a 25% discount on the regular fare. On top of that you would also need a reservation for the Glacier Express, that is correct.
If you want to go from Brig to Zermatt, the cheapest option would be to travel with the regular regional trains of MGB which also run much more frequently than the Glacier Express and get a ticket with 25% discount at the local train station or also on the train. You can also save a little bit by going from Brig to Visp using a main line train towards Geneve operated by SBB and only travel from Visp to Zermatt with MGB (SBB and MGB lines run more or less parallel between these two cities, both operators stop at the same stations).

Flo, thanks, another question, I was going to stay at a hotel across the station (you can see a nice view of the tracks from the hotel balcony), but I noticed it was only a single track. Is there two train stations in Brig , one for Glacier Express and the other line which is busier? thanks again, Greg

MGB trains stop in front of the station building on the street. All other services run from the mainline tracks in the station. Note that the MGB network is narrow gauge while the mainline tracks are standard gauge.

Hi!
I am wondering if the Brig-Disentis route have any extra reservation or any other charges if travelled with regional train? How much? How about Zermatt-Brig then?

Hi!

The regional trains on the MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) network, which is Zermatt - Brig - Andermatt - Disentis and Andermatt - Göschenen do not require an extra supplement or reservation.
However, Interrail is generally not valid on MGB trains, only for Interrail Youth pass holders a 50% reduction is granted.

Do I need to make a reservation for Brig - Disentis before? Are the regional trains often full?
