Hi folks, I have two routes that I didn't reserve any seats yet and I am wondering if it is necessary to reserve them at all?
It is a route from Copenhagen - Hamburg on 27th December and one route from Venice to Rome on 31st December

Should I reserve a seat just in case?

Hi!

The 1255 departure from Venice is a Italo train where InterRail is not valid! There are hourly Frecciargento trains operated by Trenitalia which you can use with InterRail however a 10€ reservation is required.

I would get on the Copenhagen - Hamburg train without a reservation but maybe have a look at this connection at [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] (look up the connection there); if a R symbol shows up as it currently already does on the 1343 departure this indicates that the train might be quite full so a reservation might be a good idea in that case.
If you travel without a reservation, make sure you stand quite a bit away from the stairs leading down from the main hall to the platforms: the train consists of two portions of four coaches each and only the first four run all the way to Hamburg! 2nd class coaches are in the front of the train normally. When I travelled on this route the last time in summer 2013 we easily got two seats because many people thought that they could also get on the rear portion of the train to get to Hamburg... ;)

Ah.. got you. I guess I just reserve the one from copenhagen to hamburg. Also how do I reserve a ticket from Trenitalia for the Venice to Rome train? :D

By the way I am going to continue from Rome to Siena - Pisa - Milan - Paris. Is there anything I should be aware of?

Information about how to get reservations (will soon also be included directly on the connections): ;)
Or, you can just get it locally at a ticket machine or ticket desk.

1
On the Trenitalia website, first fill in the search box the connection you are looking for.
2
At the search results, press the word select on the right beside the connection you want to use.
3
You get an overview of the different ticket types. At the bottom select VIEW OTHER PRICES AND SERVICES and press the red Continue button.
4
Now select the Service (1st or 2nd class) and as Offer: GLOBAL PASS. Then you see the reservation fee for your rail pass (Interrail and Eurail).
As Ticket Number Support fill in the first digits of your rail pass number or just 00000.
Press the red Continue button.
5
Fill in your name and data. And finally make the payment.

You can travel from Rome to Siena using regional trains only; change at Chiusi-Chianciano Terme.
Siena - Pisa is by regional trains only; Pisa - Milan can also be done by regional trains only; or take an IC train (just 3€ reservation, not compulsory but recommended).
What were your plans about Milan - Paris? The direct TGV is very expensive, about 55€ extra, as is the Thello night train where you only get 25% reduction on the full fare...

You mean the reservation with InterRail from Milan to Paris cost 55EURO on a direct train? xo

I was planning to ride a night train.

You can book online on the website of Thello [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux]

There is no Paris - Copenhagen night train; but you can travel with Paris - Hamburg night train (which runs only until 13 December and is then withdrawn) and take a daytime train from there back to Copenhagen. https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/paris-hamburg-cnl-50451/22

Wow the night train I have to pay at least 190EUR for two people? I think I might just take a direct train then...

Alright thanks again Flo, I will look more into this.

Hi.

Other option is by IC train from Milan to Ventimiglia (reservation recommended for EUR 3).
Along the coast via Monaco to Nice by free local train. And from there by direct night train to Paris (6-bed couchettes): https://rail.cc/de/nachtzug/nizza-paris-icn-5774/60
Or by TGV (Marseilles). Reservations for TGV trains: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux]
But with these solutions you will need TWO travel days.

Or Milan to Switzerland (free): https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
Switzerland to Paris: by direct TGV Lyria trains as well a high reservation - https://rail.cc/de/interrail-zugreservierung/tgv-lyria/162 - reservations [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux] - other slower workarounds possible.

Peter :)

Hi again

Do I simply go to this link [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux] to purchase a ticket there on the route Milan to Paris? I found one for 2 persons only 44EUR 08:00 - 16:00

Also since I am traveling during winter how is the temperature on the train, do I need to bring blankets on the train?

Here is my travel route by the way.

Gothenburg - Copenhagen - Hamburg - Munich - Venezia - Rome - Pisa - Milan - Paris - Hamburg - Copenhagen - Gothenburg

Everything is pretty much seat-reserved/planned, except for Rome - Pisa - Milan.

For what train did you get the price 44€? What date?

This would be a regular ticket and not an InterRail reservation - but if you want, you can of course buy this ticket and use the travel day you may save otherwise.

You do not need to bring blankets on the train - only if you would travel overnight in seated accomodation this is a good option if you dont feel comfortable with air condition; on couchette and sleeper accomodation, blankets etc are provided.

I clicked into uk.voyages-sncf.com/en/ and choose RAIL PASSES then picked Seat reservation where I found a morning train at 8AM for two people only 44EUR Milan to Paris. I suppose InterRail/EuRail counts as Rail passes?

1st Leg: Cisalpino
Dep: MILANO CENTRALE 08:23 04/01/15
Arr: LAUSANNE 11:42 04/01/15

2nd Leg: TGV Lyria
Dep; LAUSANNE 12:24 04/01/15
Arr: PARIS GARE LYON 16:03 04/01/15

This is the information I get when I try to purchase. Is Cisalpino and TGV Lyria the names of the trains?

Oh ok, if you get to the UK site of voyages-sncf... :) Yes, this looks ok.

This should be fine, Cisalpino and Lyria would be the brand name of the trains, yes, although the Cisalpino brand is outdated and these trains are nowadays simple EC (EuroCity) trains, but nevermind. ;)

I realized links other than UK are being charged more? Could this be only for UK citizens, this is confusing...

Hi.
Where are you based currently? You can also try to book it at a railway station in Europe (not in the UK).
There are different versions available for voyages-sncf. The UK version was the most modern one - the other country versions just follow since half a year and getting the functions of the UK version.
Try this link: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux]

Or also possible [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] (additional handling fees).

Hi Peter :D

The only problem is that UK version is only 22EURO for the 8AM train. Rest cost like 4x more

Hi Peter, I am not able to find anything on the site you provided [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] Milan-Paris route.
Can you help me? This is my last route I need to reserve, I just want to get it done haha...

I am having trouble deciding what to do. The site you gave me ...jdoqocy.com/4a111... looks fine to reserve a seat for her EuRail but won't we get splited on seats (If I had to book on another site for InterRail)? I would rather want to sit with her or maybe I can book on that same site too with my InterRail, will it be a problem?

I am based in Sweden by the way and planned trip is on 27th December

Hi.
... is for Eurail only.
On [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] there are results for Milan or Milano Centrale to Paris (Gare de Lyon) available. But only via Zurich and that's expensive.
If you want to sit together, you have to order together. Book via SNCF: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf/reservation[/ux] - select in the top right corner other countries. Go to the top menu, select Train, then Book your train ticket. Fill in Milan and Paris and the date. Then two travellers. Select the age. Select Season ticket: Global Pass. Then you get the results.
I right now saw that the train is full. As there are only very limited seats for rail pass travellers.
What you can do is to get to Paris on this date:
go to trenitalia.com - fill in Milano Centrale to Zurigo, NEXT. Select one of the connections show. Click it. OPEN. Then bellow click VIEW OTHER PRICES AND SERVICES (CARTAFRECCIA offers, discount cards, other offers) (very small). CONTINUE. Select Offer: Global Pass. Ticket number: 0000000. Collect the ticket before departure at a ticket machine in Milano.
Then book a second reservation (include some time to change in Zurich) from Zurich to Paris like explained above via [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux]
Peter :)

Hi Peter :) thanks for the information. But for some reason I was able to book today via your [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] milan-paris change in Lausanne for 65EUR. It was unavailable to find the routes yesterday, but I finally booked it and this was the route I wanted :D Thanks again!

Hey.
For EUR 65: not that cheap, but still okay! :)
Simply bad to handle this route if you don't want to spent hours in the train. ;)

Oh sorry I meant to say 65EUR for two of us, or isn't that cheap enough? haha
I am kinda like whatever now, consider the huge amount of time I have spent researching for the places we are going to visit, hotels and things to look out for, then I don't think a couple of hours on the train is going to hurt. This is the first time I ever travel outside Sweden in Europe so this is going to be fun hehe.

Thanks again for all the help Flow and Peter, I really appreciate it!! ;)

Ok, that's a decent price for the combination of EC to Lausanne and TGV Lyria from thereon. :)
...of course I would prefer if the rail companies would lower the prices of reservations and also made access to them easier, but meanwhile you have to be happy with what you get.
I hope you will have a great journey, thanks for supporting! :)
