Hi,
I am wondering about Winter hours and holidays for trains in Eastern Europe- will it be the same as every day or does it change- are trains less during the winter and during holidays. When I go on the Bahn site to see the trains from Budapest to Ljubljana, it won't go past December. Our plans are to go from Budapest to Ljubljana on January 1st. Will that be a problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi.
There is the annual change in the European train schedules on the second weekend in December. Therefore some schedules might not be only for now - just wait a little bit.
Try to book Budapest-Zagreb via [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux] - there is a Zagreb Special available for EUR 29.
And then Zagreb-Ljubljana separately (you can try as well to get it at the international ticket window in Budapest). It should be about EUR 17. Return tickets are always very cheap, so think about to buy them together if you travel return.

Hi!

As Peter wrote there is the timetable change in mid December and information and booking is not available/possible beyond that date in some countries.
Some trains will not run during the holiday period especially around Christmas and New Year however this mostly affects local services in that area; there will be a new (or reintroduced) direct train from Budapest to Ljubljana for which tickets on the MAV website should be available soon.
