Hello everyone! I'm planing my first Interrail with my boyfriend for the next Spring/end of Summer and I'm wondering if I'm not getting TOO ambicious with my itinerary. I'm leaving from Lisbon (beautiful, but it's hard to plan an escape route!) and thinking of heading to Bilbao first, then San Sebastian--Barcelona-Perpignan, then explore the south of France and spend a couple of days in Avignon and Arles, then off to Marseille-Rome-Florence (day trip do Sienna)- Venice- Milan and then Paris, maybe through Zurich. The return to Lisboa with an overnight train from Hendaye.
Is it too much for a 22 day pass with 10 travel days? Is it feasable? :|
For me, the fun of the Interrail pass is use the more regional trains and see the sights, but maybe for budget purposes (saving in the hostels, for instance) I should use the night trains a bit more - I could really use a helping hand, I'm losing my marbles!
Thanks.
Greetings,
Diana C.

Hi Diana,
I think this route is a bit overambitous for a 10in22...just count the travel days you will need, you wont be able to return to Portugal with just 10 travel days if you want to visit all places you mentioned. An option would be to buy extra regular tickets for some of the shorter journeys, such as Avignon to Arles, Florence to Siena...then it could be possible.
If you have a bit of extra time available you could think about this:
Buy a regular ticket for the Sud Expresso to San Sebastian; afterwards go to Bilbao using the Euskotren service (which is not included in InterRail). Then start your InterRail (10in22) with the trip from Bilbao to Barcelona and travel as planned until you reach San Sebastian again - buy another regular ticket for the night train back home if needed.
Regarding Milan to Zürich; keep in mind that the direct TGV trains require a very high reservation fee on that route (55€), also the night train operated by Thello is similarily expensive (only 25% reduction available with InterRail). You can travel cheaper if you go through Switzerland, although you will also need extra reservation(s) if you want to reach Paris within one day. With an extra stop in Zürich you could get by without extra reservations...you could also think about this route to take: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
