Places to stay in Split

I'm going to Split (Croacia). Do you think I should book an hostel before I arrive there? Some friend told me that when he arrived in Split, there were many people offering cheap house. Do you know something about it?

Yeah, this is common practice in many eastern European countries. When we were in Kotor last summer we also had nothing booking but there were many people offering accomodation at both the bus station and the tourist info. Same thing in Dubrovnik and certainly in Split as well. :)
